Abstract A picture reproducing apparatus for reproducing the information containing the compressed picture information is disclosed. The picture reproducing apparatus includes a CD-ROM drive (6) for fetching data from a disc (11) on which initial I-picture picture data for an initial picture for menu display and a plurality of updating P-picture picture data for partially updating the initial picture are recorded. The picture reproducing apparatus also includes a RAM (30) having a capacity of at least one frame and having an updating picture data storage area (31), an MPEG decoder (5) for decoding the MPEG encoded picture data and a CPU (1) for initially transmitting the initial picture data and subsequently transmitting the updating picture data to the decoder. By making a picture display for displaying menu items or the like with the aid of a compressed picture decoder as used for displaying the compressed moving picture or still picture, the menu items or the like may be displayed without employing a graphic display circuit.
A picture reproducing apparatus for reproducing the information containing the compressed picture information, comprising data fetching means (6) for fetching data from a recording medium (11) on which there are recorded at least encoded initial picture data capable of reconstituting a picture by itself and a plurality of encoded updating picture data having all patterns, said encoded updating picture data being capable of updating an initial picture on the premises that said initial picture is present, memory means (30) having a capacity of at last one frame, decoding means (5) for decoding the encoded picture data, and control means (1) for initially transmitting said initial picture data to said decoding means and subsequently transmitting the particular updating picture data which are necessary to update the initial state.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
28 words
The picture reproducing apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said memory means (5) has an updating picture data storage area (31) for storing said updating picture data.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
35 words
The picture reproducing apparatus as claimed in claim 1 further comprising key input means (7), said control means (1) transmitting the updating picture data associated with the key input at said key input means (7).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
63 words
The picture reproducing apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein said decoding means (5) decodes encoded picture data, said encoded picture data having been produced by transforming an input picture and a differential picture, formed by taking a difference between the input picture and a picture produced by a pre-set predictive coding, into pre-set coefficient data, and by encoding the resulting coefficient data.
