Abstract

<IMAGE> For the disposal of the inert gas portion of an anode- or cathode-side gas mixture of a fuel cell block, current-dependent regulation and regulation methods are known, which, however, are associated with a high volume and weight and high installation costs, which should be avoided. For this purpose, it is provided that a gas mixture (O2, IG or H2, IG) flowing through the fuel cells (2, 4) on the cathode or anode side, in which there is a progressive increase in the proportion of inert gas (IG) as a function of a voltage drop (ΔU ) Drain the gas mixture enriched with inert gas. The voltage drop (ΔU) between at least two immediately adjacent fuel cells (2, 4) is measured. This ensures that a voltage measurement that is simple to carry out in terms of process engineering and easy to install is used to set the proportion of inert gas (IG) to be discharged from the fuel cell block (1) of the gas mixture (H2, IG or O2, IG) on the anode or cathode side. The method and the fuel cell block according to the invention can in principle be used in all types of fuel cells. <IMAGE>
