Abstract

Abstract Network elements in a telecommunications network, such as toll switches, databases and the like, are provided with redundant SS7 signaling interfaces (e.g., 300-1, 400-1) based on different software designs. At least one of the interfaces, referred to as a network endpoint signaling transfer point, or NESTP (400-1), is loosely coupled to its host (202-1) and has signaling transfer point (STP) capabilities. In a routing table within the NESTP, a plurality of prioritized route lists are provided for at least some destinations, the list that is used to route a particular message to such a destination being a function of the route by which that message arrived at the NESTP.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 59 words
Apparatus for use in a telecommunications system, the apparatus comprising a network element (e.g., 200-1), and at least first and second software-based SS7 signaling interface means (e.g., 300-1, 400-1) for communicating SS7 messages between the network element and other network elements of the telecommunications system, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the first and second SS7 signaling interface means exhibit software diversity.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 32 words
The invention of claim 1 wherein the software (Software II) of the first SS7 signaling interface means is substantially different from the software (Software III) of the second SS7 signaling interface means.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The invention of claim 2 wherein the first and second SS7 signaling interface means each implements a common set of core requirements.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
The invention of claim 3 wherein the software of the first SS7 signaling inteface means includes a first operating system and wherein the software of the second SS7 signaling interface means includes a second, different operating system.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 47 words
The invention of claim 4 wherein the software of the first SS7 signaling interface means is derived from programming in a first source code language and wherein the software of the second SS7 signaling interface means is derived from programming in a second, different source code language.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 57 words
The invention of claim 5 wherein the software of the first SS7 signaling interface means is derived from programming carried out by a first programmer group and wherein the software of the second SS7 signaling interface means is derived from programming carried out by a second programmer group that is substantially different from the first programmer group.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 91 words
A method of realizing first and second software-based SS7 signaling interfaces to be used by network element of a telecommunications network in order to communicate SS7 messages to other network elements of the network, the method CHARACTERIZED BY the steps of developing a set of core requirements for the interfaces, implementing the first SS7 signaling interface via software created by a first group of programmers, and implementing the second SS7 signaling interface via software created by a second group of programmers which is substantially different from the first group of programmers.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The invention of claim 7 wherein the first and second groups of programmers are in respective different geographical locations.
