Abstract

<IMAGE> An arrangement is to be created which is capable of synchronizing the carrier of the receiver oscillator with the carrier of the QAM received signal at a high initial frequency offset. An area decider (22) in the QAM receiver divides the level of the complex QAM receive signal values into active areas and into passive areas, a phase correction signal for the receiver oscillator (17) being generated when a QAM receive signal value arrives in one of the active areas. There are right active areas (R1, R2, R3, R4) from which a phase correction signal is emitted which causes the phase of the carrier oscillator to rotate clockwise, and there are left active areas (L1, L2, L3, L4) from which a phase correction signal is emitted a left turn of the carrier phase of the receiver oscillator causes. The active areas are arranged and have such a shape that the phase correction signal initiated by them reliably tracks the carrier of the receiver oscillator onto the carrier of the QAM received signal. <IMAGE>
