Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim
70 words
An epoxy resin composition comprising: 100 parts by weight of an epoxy resin; and from 1 to 50 parts by weight of a block copolymer having at least one selectively carboxylated block of a monalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon connected to at least one selectively hydrogenated block of a conjugated diene; the block copolymer being dispersed in the epoxy resin with a volume average particle size ranging from 0.05 to 0.20 microns.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
15 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a curing agent for epoxy resins.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
46 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the block copolymer is a diblock copolymer having a shell-core structure wherein cores of the selectively hydrogenated blocks of the conjugated diene are surrounded by shells of the selectively carboxylated blocks of the monoalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
20 words
A composition as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 3, wherein the monoalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon is styrene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
24 words
A composition as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 4, wherein the conjugated diene is butadiene, isoprene, or a combination thereof.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
34 words
A composition as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 5, wherein the epoxy resin is a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol F, or a combination thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
49 words
A composition as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 6, wherein the block copolymer is a carboxylated polystyrene-hydrogenated polyisoprene diblock copolymer having from 4.0 to 10.0 percent by weight, based on the weight of the polystyrene block, of acid groups selectively grafted to the polystyrene blocks.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
85 words
A process for the preparation of an epoxy resin composition, comprising the steps of: emulsifying a block copolymer by addition of a polar solvent to a solution of the block copolymer in a less polar solvent, the block copolymer consisting of at least one selectively carboxylated block of a monoalkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon connected to at least one selectively hydrogenated block of a conjugated diene; and combining the emulsion of the block copolymer with an epoxy resin in an amount sufficient to toughen the epoxy resin.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
27 words
A process as claimed in claim 8, further comprising the step of removing all solvents from the epoxy resin composition to form a solvent-free epoxy resin composition.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
25 words
A process as claimed in claim 8 or 9, wherein the less polar solvent is tetrahydrofuran and the polar solvent is water or an alcohol.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
35 words
A process as claimed in any one of the claims 8 to 10, wherein a solution of from 2 to 15 percent by weight of the block copolymer in the less polar solvent is used.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
33 words
A process as claimed in any one of the claims 8 to 11, wherein the block copolymer used consists of one selectively carboxylated block of styrene and one selectively hydrogenated block of isoprene.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
37 words
A process as claimed in claim 12; wherein the block copolymer has of from 4.0 to 10.0 percent by weight, based on the weight of the polystyrene block, of acid groups selectively grafted to the polystyrene block.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
34 words
A process as claimed in any one of the claims 1 to 13, wherein the epoxy resin is a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol F, or a combination thereof.
