Abstract

Abstract An implant fixation stem (2) has a distal portion with a controlled stiffness. In one embodiment the deflection in response to a given force is equal to other similarly designed stems to give a surgeon consistent implantation feedback regardless of implant size. The deflection is preferably provided via a slot (3) in the stem (2), the slot (3) length being determined as a function of the stem's moment of inertia. Alternate embodiments provide for flutes (11,12) of unequal length.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 35 words
A system of stemmed implants, wherein each implant has a portion of its stem that exhibits a predetermined deflection in response to a predetermined force that is substantially equal to that of the other implants.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 16 words
The system of claim 1 wherein each implant stem has a distal portion containing a slot.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The system of claim 2 wherein the slot is internally chamfered at its distal end.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
The system of claim 3 wherein the slot is externally chamfered at its distal end.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The system of claim 4 wherein the slot is cut in the medial-lateral plane.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 33 words
The system of claim 4 wherein the internal chamfer length is approximately equal to one-half the length of the slot and the external chamfer length is no greater than the internal chamfer length.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 60 words
A femoral hip implant comprising a stem having an end defining a neck and an opposite rounded end, the rounded end containing a slot defining two sides, one side of the slot further being externally chamfered, the other side of the slot being internally chamfered such that the internal chamfer length is at least as long the external chamfer length.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 14 words
The implant of claim 7 wherein the slot is cut in the medial-lateral plane.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 73 words
A hip implant for insertion into a femur, the implant having aspects associated with the medial, lateral, anterior and posterior portions or the femur; the implant comprising a stem having a proximal end defining a neck and an opposite distal end; the stem portion adjacent the distal end containing medial, lateral, anterior and posterior flutes which extend proximally; the medial and lateral flute lengths being shorter than the anterior and posterior flute lengths.
