Abstract

Abstract A radio communication system comprises a first transceiver (M) and a plurality of further transceivers (S1 to S6) of which some (S4 to S6) but not all are out of range of the first transceiver (M) and none of which is out of range of all the others. In operation the first transceiver (M) transmits a radio message having a pre-determined format, and each of the further transceivers (S1 to S6) receiving the message, whether directly (S1, S2 and S3) or indirectly (S4 and S5), re-transmits that message in synchronism or substantially in synchronism with all the other further tranceivers which received the message at the same time, so that in general a further transceiver out of range of the first transceiver will receive the message simultaneously from two or more sources. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 234 words
A radio communication system comprising a transmitter (M) for transmitting message frames having a predetermined format and a plurality of transceivers (S1-S6) of which some (S4-S6) but not all are out of range of the transmitter (M) and none of which is out of range of all the others, each of the transceivers being arranged to transmit and receive message frames in the said format with successive groups of the transceivers being arranged to transmit message frames in synchronism or substantially in synchronism, characterised in that each transceiver (S1-S6) is arranged, automatically and solely in response to the receipt of a message frame in said format, and subject to the contents of the message frame, to re-transmit that message frame in synchronism or substantially in synchronism with any and all other transceivers (S1-S6) which received the message frame at the same time as itself, in that the message frame includes iteration data which defines the number of times the message frame has been transmitted or re-transmitted and the total number of times the message frame is to be transmitted or to be re-transmitted, and in that each transceiver (S1-S6) is responsive to the iteration data in a received message frame to determine if the last transmission or re-transmission has been made and if so not to re-transmit the received message frame and if not to update the iteration data and re-transmit the message frame.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 16 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the transmitter is also a transceiver.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 64 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the message frame may contain participation data defining for each further transceiver (S1-S6) whether or not it is to re-transmit a received message frame, and wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is responsive to the participation data in a received message frame to re-transmit or not re-transmit the message frame as defined by the data.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 43 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is arranged, in respect of a message frame which the transceiver has received and re-transmitted, to store said message frame until all subsequent re-transmissions have taken place.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 80 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 4, wherein the message frame may include address data identifying a specific further transceiver and request data requiring a response from the specified transceiver, and wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is arranged to determine from said address data, when all re-transmissions of the message frame have taken place, if it is the specified transceiver and if so to construct and transmit a further message frame of said predetermined format containing response data.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 87 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the message frame contains a portion in which all or selected ones of the further transceivers, as defined by data in the message frame, are to place response data prior to re-transmission of the message frame, and wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is arranged to determine from a received message frame if it is required to place response data in said message frame portion, and if so to do so and if not not to do so.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 113 words
A radio communication system as claimed in claim 6, wherein the iteration data defines an initial number of re-transmissions in respect of which a further transceiver (S1-S6) receiving the message frame may place response data in the said message frame portion, and a further number of re-transmissions in respect of which a further transceiver (S1-S6) receiving the message frame may not place response data in the message frame portion, and wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is responsive to said iteration data upon receiving a message frame for re-transmission to determine whether or not it is to place response data in said message frame portion and to place or not place response data accordingly.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 92 words
A radio communication system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the message frame includes synchronising data whose characteristics are known by each further transceiver (S1-S6), and wherein each further transceiver (S1-S6) is responsive to the synchronising data in a received message frame to establish a point in time which is common or substantially common to any and all further transducers which received the message frame, each further transducer (S1-S6) re-transmitting the message frame, subject to the contents of the message frame, starting a pre-determined period after the common point in time.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
A radio communication system as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the transmitter (M) is mobile.
