Abstract

Abstract An optical system for a display having a combiner (1) with a non-conformal reflection hologram and in which an intermediate image (II) of a display source is formed at a location in the light path to and spaced from the combiner (1), the system comprising at least one diffractive element (5,7) disposed in the light path between the display source (2) and the intermediate image (II) and arranged to counter, at least partially, the chromatic dispersion of the non-conformal reflection hologram (1).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
An optical system for a display having a combiner (1) with a non-conformal reflection hologram and in which an intermediate image (II) of a display source is formed at a location in the light path to and spaced from the combiner (1), the system comprising at least one diffractive element (5,7) disposed in the light path between the display source (2) and the intermediate image (II) and arranged to counter, at least partially, the chromatic dispersion of the non-conformal reflection hologram (1).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 48 words
An optical system according to Claim 1 comprising two diffractive elements disposed in the light path between the display source and the intermediate image, wherein one of the two diffractive elements is arranged largely to counter lateral colour and the other is arranged largely to counter longitudinal colour.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 40 words
An optical system according to Claim 2 in which said one diffractive element basically takes the form of a lined diffraction grating and is located towards the conjugate position of the non-conformal reflection hologram with respect to the intermediate image.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
An optical system according to Claim 2 in which said other diffractive element basically takes the form of a circular diffraction grating and is located at or near a pupil position.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 25 words
An optical system according to Claim 3 in which said other diffractive element takes the form of a surface relief hologram in a hydrid doublet.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
An optical system according to Claim 2 in which the two diffractive elements are incorporated in a relay lens arrangement.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
An optical system according to Claim 6 in which the relay lens arrangement incorporates a prism.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
An optical system according to Claim 1 having a single diffractive element disposed in the light path between the display source and the intermediate image.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
An optical system according to Claim 8 in which the single diffractive element is located at or near the conjugate position of the non-conformal hologram with respect to the intermediate image.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A display having an optical system according to claim 1, the display being mounted on a helmet having a visor which carries the non-conformal reflection hologram and constitutes the combiner.
