Abstract

Abstract A guide wire, has a core (18) and a plastic jacket (38) enclosing the core. The plastic jacket comprises a proximal portion (40) formed of a first plastic material and a distal jacket portion (42) formed of a second plastic material. The distal end of the proximal jacket portion and the proximal end of the distal jacket portion substantially abut each other and are of substantially equal outer diameters so as to form a smooth transition between the proximal and the distal jacket portions. According to another aspect, there is provided a guide wire with a selectively formable metallic core and a plastic jacket encasing the formable core. The plastic jacket has a distal portion with a hydrophilic coating and a proximal portion without a hydrophilic coating. According to another aspect, there is provided a guide wire having a formable metallic core and a plastic jacket encasing the formable core. The plastic jacket has a distal portion that is more radiopaque than a proximal portion.

Claim 2
Dependent Claim 17 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 1 wherein said distal jacket portion is made of polyurethane.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein said proximal jacket portion is made of Teflon.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said distal jacket portion has radiopaque properties.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 4 wherein said distal jacket portion is loaded with a material selected from bismuth, barium, and tungsten.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims comprising a marker (56) located around a distal end (58) of said core beneath said plastic jacket.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 6 wherein said marker is substantially radiopaque.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said distal jacket portion has a hydrophilic coating.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 8 wherein the proximal jacket portion does not have a hydrophilic coating.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein said core is formable in at least a portion thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 16 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 10 wherein said core is made of stainless steel.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 10 or claim 11 in which the core is formable in a distal portion thereof and non-formable in a proximal portion thereof.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 40 words
A guide wire comprising: a metallic core formable in at least a portion thereof, and a plastic jacket encasing said core, said plastic jacket having a distal portion with a hydrophilic coating and a proximal portion without a hydrophilic coating.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 16 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 13 wherein said core is made of stainless steel.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 21 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 13 or claim 14 wherein said core is tapered at a distal end thereof.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 31 words
A guide wire as claimed in any one of claims 13 to 15, in which the core is formable in a distal portion thereof and non-formable in a proximal portion thereof.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 16 words
A guide wire as claimed in claim 16 in which the core is made of nitinol.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 42 words
A guide wire comprising: a metallic core formable in at least a portion thereof, and a plastic jacket encasing said core, said plastic jacket having a distal portion and a proximal portion, said distal portion being more radiopaque than said proximal portion.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 23 words
