Abstract

Abstract Disclosed is an improved radial bus assembly for use, for example with a parallel processing system. The radial bus assembly comprises a stack of disks (12) each having an integrated circuit crossbar switch (13) fixed at its centre, a plurality of communication lines (20) of substantially equal length radially extending from the communication terminals of the crossbar switch and terminating on the circumference of the disk, a plurality of control lines (22) each being arranged between adjacent communication lines, and radially extending from the control terminals of the crossbar switch and terminating short of the circumference of the disk, and male-and-female joints (25) to electrically connect the terminations of the control lines of all disks in terms of same angular positions longitudinally in common. This arrangement permits substantial reduction of disk size by shifting the control terminals from the circumference of the disk to the inside space thereof, thus accordingly reducing the whole size of the laminated cylindrical bus structure, and hence increasing the data transfer speed on shortened radial communication lines.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 142 words
A radial bus assembly comprising a stack of disks (12) each having an integrated circuit crossbar switch (13) fixed at its centre, a plurality of communication lines (20) of substantially equal length radially extending from the communication terminals of said crossbar switch (13) and terminating on the circumference of the disk, a plurality of control lines (22) each being arranged between adjacent communication lines, and radially extending from the control terminals of said crossbar switch (13) and terminating short of the circumference of the disk, and common connector means (25) to electrically connect the terminations of said control lines (22) of all disks (12) at the same angular positions and longitudinally in common, whereby a switching control unit can be connected to said common connector means (25) to control the closing-and-opening of the contacts of all the crossbar switches (13) in unison.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 29 words
An assembly according to claim 1, wherein the common connector means comprises male and female joints (25) fixed to the disk (12) with their male parts (25A) thrusting therethrough.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
An assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each of said disks (12) has a plurality of receptacles (21) on its circumference to terminate all communication lines (20).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 82 words
A parallel processing system comprising a radial bus assembly according to any of the preceding claims, a plurality of boards (31) each having a processing unit (30) and means to electrically connect said processing unit to the termination of each of said communication lines(20), said boards being arranged radially around said stack of disks (12), and a switching control unit connected to said common connector means (25) to control the closing-and-opening of the contacts of all the crossbar switches (It) in unison.
