Abstract
Abstract This invention relates to fluorohydrocarbon polymers which are modified by the incorporation of substitiuents bearing a functional group such as vinyl, allyl, acrylate, alkoxysilane, amido, sulfonic acid salt, pyridine, carboxylic ester and carboxylic salt. The functional groups may be further reacted to obtain branching, grafting or crosslinking of the polymers. Copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropene such as VITON A rubber and KYNAR FLEX 2801 plastomer, are typical of the class of fluorohydrocarbon polymers which are modified to obtain the new materials of this invention.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
126 words
A fluorohydrocarbon polymer containing a modifying substituent attached to a carbon atom of the polymer chain by a bond to a nucleophilic atom of the modifying substituent, the nucleophilic atom is either an amino, an oxy or a thio group; the modifying substituent further comprising a linking segment and a latent reactive segment, the linking segment links the nucleophilic atom to the latent reactive segment and contains multiple carbon atoms with a carbon atom bonded to the nucleophilic atom, the latent reactive segment is selected from a group consisting of a vinyl group, an allyl group, an acrylate group, a silane with a hydrolyzable group, an amide group, an sulfonic acid salt group, a pyridine group, a carboxylic ester group and a carboxylic acid salt group.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
85 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 1 where the modifying substituent is represented by the general formula -YRZ where Y represents oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur; R represents a linking segment containing 2 to 20 carbon atoms and Z represents a vinyl group, an allyl group, an acrylate group, a silane with a hydrolyzable group, an amide group, an acid salt group, a pyridine group or an ester group, with the proviso that Z is not bonded to the same carbon atom to which Y is bonded.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
59 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 2 where Y represents nitrogen and Z represents a silane represented by the general formula -SiR³ n (OR²) 3-n where R³ is an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbons, vinyl, allyl, 5-hexenyl, trifluoropropyl or phenyl and R² is an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbons and n is 0, 1 or 2.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 2 where Z is a vinyl or acrylate group and where the polymer is further crosslinked by exposure to UV irradiation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 2 where Z is a vinyl or allyl group and where the polymer is further crosslinked by reaction with poly(hydromethyl)siloxanes.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
16 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 3 where the polymer is further crosslinked by reaction with water.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 6 where the reaction with water is catalyzed by a tin compound or a titanium compound.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
30 words
The fluorohydrocarbon polymer of claim 3 where the hydrolyzable groups of the silane are cohydrolyzed with a grafting silane selected from the group consisting of dimethyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropylchlorosilane, methyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropyldichlorosilane, dimethyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropylmethoxysilane and methyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropyldimethoxysilane.
