Abstract

Abstract An integral hub and exciter ring (10) is disclosed for a motor vehicle equipped with an anti-lock braking system in which the exciter ring is integrally formed with the hub by machining grooves (26) into the hub forming spaced teeth (30) about the circumference of the hub. To improve the magnetic permeability of the teeth (30) as compared to the cast iron of the hub, a steel band (20) is insert cast into the hub resulting in a steel band (20) having improved magnetic permeability and also being molecularly bonded to the cast iron to ensure retention of the band (20) in the hub.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 111 words
An integral hub and exciting ring assembly for a motor vehicle of the type having an anti-lock braking system comprising: a cast iron hub having means for affixing a wheel to said hub and means for rotatably mounting said hub to a suspension structure of the motor vehicle; a ring bonded to said cast iron hub and being of a material having a magnetic permeability greater than cast iron to form a surface of said hub; and spaced teeth formed in said surface by grooves in said ring between said teeth with said teeth joined to one another by a portion of said ring remaining at the base of said grooves.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 17 words
The integral hub and exciter ring assembly of Claim 1 wherein said ring is made of steel.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
The integral hub and exciter ring assembly of Claim 1 wherein said teeth are joined to one another by a portion of said ring remaining at one lengthwise end of said teeth.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
The integral hub and exciter ring of Claim 1 wherein said ring forms a cylindrical outer surface of said hub with said teeth and grooves extending axially.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The integral hub and exciter ring assembly of Claim 4 wherein said ring is disposed at one axial end of said cast iron hub.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 40 words
The integral hub and exciter ring assembly of Claim 4 wherein said ring is spaced axially from one axial end of said cast iron hub with said cast iron hub forming a radially extending lip to axially entrap said ring.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 138 words
The method of making an integral hub and exciter ring assembly for a motor vehicle of the type having an anti-lock braking system comprising the steps of: forming a mold cavity for molding a cast iron motor vehicle hub thereon; placing a ring member of a material having a greater magnetic permeability than cast iron into said cavity; pouring an iron alloy into said cavity to form a cast iron motor vehicle hub with said ring member bonded to said iron alloy; machining an interior bore in said cast iron motor vehicle hub whereby a rotation axis of said hub is defined; machining said cast iron motor vehicle hub to expose said ring member at a surface of said cast iron motor vehicle hub; and forming spaced grooves in said ring member whereby spaced teeth are formed therebetween.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 49 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein said ring member forms a cylindrical outer surface of said hub, said ring member being formed by the steps of: bending a flat strip to form a cylindrical band with the ends of said strip abutting one another; and welding said ends together.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 104 words
The method of Claim 7 wherein said ring member forms a cylindrical outer surface of said hub, said ring member being formed by bending a flat strip to form a cylindrical band having a circumference greater than the length of said strip whereby the ends of said strip are circumferentially spaced from one another and said band is inserted into said mold cavity by deflecting one end of said band radially inwardly of the other end and totally compressing said band, and after inserting said band into said cavity releasing said band whereby said band expands radially outwardly against the surface of said cavity.
