Abstract

Abstract A resistance adjusting type heater has a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, at least two electrodes (11) for enabling electrical heating of the honeycomb structure, provided on the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting means in the form of slits (12) provided between the electrodes. The thicknesses of passage walls (a,b) at the portions of the honeycomb structure at which electricity flows at a very high density are increased with a conductive material to prevent abnormal heat generation at these portions of the honeycomb structure.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
A resistance adjusting type heater comprising a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, at least two electrodes for enabling electrical heating of the honeycomb structure, provided on the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting means provided between the electrodes, wherein the thicknesses of passage walls at the portions of the honeycomb structure at which electricity flows at a very high density are increased with a conductive material to prevent the abnormal heat generation at said portions of the honeycomb structure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 79 words
A resistance adjusting type heater comprising a honeycomb structure having a large number of passages, at least two electrodes for enabling electrical heating of the honeycomb structure, provided on the honeycomb structure, and a resistance adjusting means provided between the electrodes, wherein the passages at the portions of the honeycomb structure at which electricity flows at a very high density are filled with a conductive material to prevent the abnormal heat generation at said portions of the honeycomb structure.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A resistance adjusting type heater according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the resistance adjusting means is a slit.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 68 words
A heater having a honeycomb body having an array of parallel passages separated by partition walls and at least two electrodes for passing electric current through said honeycomb body to heat it, said honeycomb body having a plurality of slits arranged to provide a serpentine current path through said honeycomb body, characterized by relatively thicker wall regions providing relatively low electrical resistance adjacent inner ends of said slits.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 76 words
A heater according to claim 4 wherein said relatively thicker wall regions are constituted by at least one of (a) at least one said partition wall of at least one said passage adjacent said inner end of said slit having relatively greater thickness than a standard uniform partition wall thickness in said honeycomb body, and (b) at least one said passage adjacent said inner end of said slit being at least partly filled with conductive material.
