Abstract
Abstract A boot process is performed from one of a floppy disk drive, a detachable hard disk drive, and a DOS-ROM. The boot priority is changed in accordance with the connection state of the detachable hard disk drive. The boot priority can be changed quickly by depressing a function key from a normal boot mode to an HDD boot mode or vice versa.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
88 words
A personal computer having a plurality of bootstrap devices, at least one of the bootstrap devices being detachable to the personal computer, characterized in that there are provided: means (11, Fig. 3) for detecting the connection state of the detachable bootstrap device; and means (Figs. 4A and 4B) for preliminarily defining the boot priority order in response to the detection of the connection state of the detachable bootstrap device; and means (Figs. 4A and 4B) for setting up the bootstrap devices in the order of the boot priorities.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
A personal computer according to claim 1, characterized in that the plurality of bootstrap devices include a floppy disk drive (32, 33), a hard disk drive (20), and a disk operating system memory (26).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A personal computer according to claim 1, characterized in that the detachable bootstrap device is a hard disk drive.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
19 words
A personal computer according to claim 1, characterized by further comprising means (36) for quickly changing the boot priority.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
36 words
A personal computer according to claim 4, characterized in that the means for quickly changing the boot priority comprises a function key (36a) and a flag means (59) for storing the depression of the function key.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
65 words
A personal computer according to claim 4, characterized in that the means for quickly changing the boot priority changes a normal boot mode wherein a boot process is executed from one of the floppy disk drive and the DOS-ROM and a hard disk drive boot mode wherein the boot process is executed from one of the hard disk drive and the disk operating system memory.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
75 words
A method for performing the boot process in a personal computer having a plurality of bootstrap devices, each of them having a different boot priority and one of them being a detachable type, comprising the computer steps of: a) detecting (Figs. 4A and 4B) the connection of the detachable bootstrap device; and b) changing (Figs. 4A and 4B) the boot priority of the bootstrap devices in response to the detection of the detachable bootstrap device.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
75 words
A method for performing the boot process in a personal computer having a plurality of bootstrap devices, each of them having a different boot priority and one of them being a detachable type, comprising the computer steps of: a) detecting (Figs. 4A and 4B) the connection of the detachable bootstrap device; and b) changing (Figs. 4A and 4B) the boot priority of the bootstrap devices in response to the detection of the detachable bootstrap device.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
131 words
A method according to claim 7, characterized in that the personal computer has a normal boot mode wherein a boot process is executed from one of the floppy disk drive and a disk operating system memory and a hard disk drive boot mode wherein the boot process is executed from one of the hard disk drive and the disk operating system memory, the method further comprises the steps of: a) detecting, during an execution of an initialize routine after the personal computer is powered, an input signal indicating the change of the boot priority from an input device (Figs. 9A and 9B); and b) changing the normal mode to the hard disk drive boot mode or vice versa in response to the detection of the input signal (Figs. 9A and 9B).
