Abstract

Abstract A well fluid sampling tool (10) has a body (18) and a sampling port (40). A valve (70) normally closes the port (40) and on one side contacts oil in chamber (36). Chamber (36) communicates through a throttle (64) with dump chamber (38) but the communication is initially blocked by a frangible disk (82). The tool is lowered to the desired sampling position in the well and the fluid pressure externally of the tool is increased. This causes piston (70) to compress the oil and, after fracture of the disk (82) the oil passes slowly to the dump (38) and piston (70) moves slowly to the right (Figure 4). A passage (100) in piston (70) is brought into registry with port (40) to permit fluid to flow into sample chamber (34). Continued movement of piston (70) then closes passage (100), sealing the sample fluid in the chamber (34).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 173 words
A fluid sampling apparatus (10), which comprises a body (18) having a first chamber (34), a second chamber (36), a third chamber (38) and a sample port (40) defined therein, said sample port being communicated with an outside zone (11) outside said body; impedance means (50), disposed in said body between said second and third chambers, for impeding fluid flow from said second chamber to said third chamber; sample valve means (70), disposed in said body between said sample port and said first chamber, for being moved relative to said body in response to outside pressure from said outside zone acting on said sample valve means, and for communicating said sample port with said first chamber only after a predetermined first time delay after said outside pressure begins moving said sample valve means; and selective blocking means (72), disposed in said body between said second and third chambers, for initially isolating said second chamber from said third chamber to hydraulically block said sample valve means against movement in response to said outside pressure.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 48 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said selective blocking means (72) communicates said second (36) and third (38) chambers when a pressure differential between said outside zone (11) and said third chamber reaches a predetermined level so that said outside pressure can move said sample valve means (70).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said selective blocking means (72) comprises a rupture disk (82).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said selective blocking means (72) communicates said second (36) and third (38) chambers independently of the value of a pressure differential between said outside zone (11) and said third chamber so that said outside pressure can move said sample valve means (70).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 108 words
Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said selective blocking means (186) comprises a blocking valve (188) having a closed position wherein said second (150) and third (152) chambers are isolated from each other, and an open position wherein said second and third chambers are communicated with each other; enabling means for moving said blocking valve from its said closed position to its said open position and for thereby enabling said sample valve means to be moved by said outside pressure; and timer means (206) for providing a second time delay prior to a time at which said enabling means moves said blocking valve to its said open position.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said selective blocking means includes timer means (206) for providing a second time delay prior to a time at which said selective blocking means communicates said second and third chambers.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 43 words
Apparatus according to claim 5 or 6, wherein said timer means is a hydraulic timer means (206) having a fluid flow restriction (214) and a spring (210) biased piston means (208) for pushing a predetermined volume of fluid through said fluid flow restriction.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
Apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said spring biased piston (208) is biased by a compressed gas spring (Figure 13).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus according to claim 5,6,7 or 8, further comprising mechanical initiating means (228) for starting said hydraulic timer means (206) prior to placement of said apparatus in a well.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 34 words
Apparatus according to claim 5,6,7 or 8, further comprising pressure responsive switching means (274) for starting said hydraulic timer means (206) in response to an increase in said outside pressure to a predetermined level.
