Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for operating an electronic reprographic system providing for the storing of information in the system of the status of all jobs in the system, monitoring the system for faults, providing for crash recovery, wherein communication between processing units of the system enables the system to recommence printing at the point at which a crash occurred, and allowing the system to tie a fault discovered in the system with a job containing a faulted feature so that the printing jobs may be completed sequentially up to a job requiring a faulted feature. Additionally, the system is capable of permitting a higher-priority job to interrupt a currently-printed job in order to be printed non-sequentially. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 124 words
A method of operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing, the method comprising the steps of: storing information in the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; printing the jobs in accordance with the print features stored in the system; monitoring the system for detection of a faulted feature for a job in the system, and completing printing of all jobs entered into the system not requiring the faulted feature up to the job requiring the faulted feature.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the storing step includes storing the information in at least one job bank containing all features for one set of the job.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 2, wherein only one set of job features is required for a job requiring multiple copies.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 106 words
A method of operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory in a controller, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing in a printer, the method comprising the steps of: storing information in the printer regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; monitoring the system for the detection of a crash in the system, and providing for a series of crash recovery messages from the printer to the controller.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method of claim 4, wherein the crash recovery messages include information regarding the features of a job or jobs which were being processed in the system at the time of the crash.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 4, wherein the crash recovery messages indicate whether the jobs entered into the system were completed.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 122 words
A method of operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs, wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing, the method comprising the steps of: storing information in the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; storing information regarding the faults which have occurred in the system, providing for the system to associate a faulted feature with a job requiring the faulted feature, and providing for the system to complete all jobs not requiring the faulted feature, up to a job requiring the faulted feature.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 104 words
A method of operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing, the method comprising the steps of: storing information in the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; printing the jobs in accordance with the print features stored in the system, and providing for the interruption of a job currently printing to permit another job to be printed non-sequentially.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 8, further comprising the step of permitting the said another job to be completed and delivered non-sequentially.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 127 words
An apparatus for operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing, comprising: means for storing information in the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; means for printing the jobs in accordance with the print features stored in the system; means for monitoring the system for detection of a faulted feature for a job in the system, and means for completing printing of all jobs entered into the system not requiring the faulted feature, up to the job requiring the faulted feature.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 24 words
The apparatus of claim 10, wherein information in the system is stored in at least one job bank, containing all features for the job.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 119 words
An apparatus for operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned in a scanner component, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory in a controller component, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing in a printing component, comprising: means for storing information in printing component of the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; means for monitoring the system for the detection of a crash in the system, and means for providing for a series of crash recovery messages from the printer to the controller of the system.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 124 words
An apparatus for operating an electronic reprographic system capable of processing a plurality of jobs wherein at least one set of original documents which comprises a job to be printed is scanned, images of the scanned documents are electronically stored in memory, and the images are converted to electronic pages for printing, comprising: means for storing information in the system regarding print features of all jobs entered into the system; means for storing information regarding the faults which have occurred in the system; means for providing for the system to associate a faulted feature to a job requiring said faulted feature; means for providing for the system to complete all jobs not requiring the faulted feature up to a job requiring the faulted feature.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 104 words
