Abstract

Abstract A multi-media communication apparatus having functions of receiving/transmitting images, audio signals, code data and the like. A detection unit is provided to detect an error in an image signal received from a communication partner's terminal. A transmission unit transmits a picture renewal request command to the partner's terminal based on a detection signal from the detection unit to automatically recover a disturbance of the received image. If the received image becomes discontinuous or disturbed at time of frame synchronization error or the like, the image immediately before the occurrence of disturbance or a different image, e.g., an image for informing of the operator of the apparatus condition, is displayed in place of the disturbed image. The operator can be informed of occurrence of a communication error through the same media as those used for communication before the occurrence of the error.

A data communication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said data communication apparatus comprises a multi-media communication apparatus capable of performing communication through the medium of voice, image and data.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said data communication apparatus is connected to an integrated service digital network.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 64 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said selection means supplies the image received by said reception means to said display means if said synchronization detection means recognizes that the image is synchronized, and said selection means supplies the control image stored in said image memory to said display means if said synchronization detection means recognizes that the image is not synchronized.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 91 words
A multi-media communication apparatus comprising: first communication means for communicating with a partner's communication apparatus by using image information; second communication means for communicating with the partner's communication apparatus by using information other than image information; an image memory in which an image for control is stored; display means for displaying images; discrimination means for discriminating whether or not communication using an image is being performed by said first communication means; and selection means for selectively supplying said display means with the image used for communication or the image for control.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said second communication means performs communication using voice and data.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 59 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said discrimination means subtracts an amount of information for communication performed by said second communication means from an amount of information for communication obtained by negotiation with the partner's communication apparatus, and said discrimination means determines that image communication is not performed if the remainder of the subtraction is zero.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 60 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said selection means supplies the image used for communication by said first communication means to said display means if said discrimination means determines that image communication is being performed, and supplies the image for control to the display means if said discrimination means determines that image communication is not being performed.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 49 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 4, further comprising synchronization detection means for detecting synchronization of the image used for communication by said first communication means, said selection means supplying the image for control to said display means if an asynchronous state of the communication image is detected.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 70 words
A data communication apparatus comprising: reception means for receiving an image sent from a partner's apparatus; display means for displaying the received image; a received image memory for storing the received image; detection means for detecting the reception condition of the received image; and control means for supplying the image in said received image memory to said display means if said detection means detects an error in the reception condition.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 52 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 10, further comprising a control image memory in which an image for control is stored, said control means supplying the image for control stored in said control image memory to said display means if the error is not recovered in a certain length of time.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 34 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said control means supplied the image received by said reception means to said display means if said detection means detects the completion of error recovery.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 65 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 10, further comprising a switch changed over to input the received image to said received image memory or to inhibit the received image from being input to said received image memory, said switch being changed over to inhibit the received image from being input to said received image memory if an error is detected by said detection means.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 38 words
A data communication apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said data communication apparatus comprises a multi-medial communication apparatus capable of performing communication through the medium of voice, image and data and connected to an integrated service digital network.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 59 words
A multi-media communication apparatus comprising: communication means for transmitting/receiving an image signal and a voice signal as a frame; detection means for detecting an error in a received frame; and output means for outputting a voice or an image for error notification in place of the received voice or image if an error is detected by said detection means.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 33 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 15, further comprising a first memory in which an error notification voice is stored, and a second memory in which an error notification image is stored.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 43 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 16, further comprising a first discrimination means for discriminating whether or not voice communication is being performed by said communication means, and a second discrimination means for discriminating whether or not image communication is being performed.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 51 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said output means output an error notification through both voice and image media if it is determined based on the results of discrimination of the first and second discrimination means that communication is performed by using both the voice and image media.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 55 words
A multi-media communication apparatus according to claim 17, wherein said output means output an error notification through one of voice and image media, if it is determined based on the results of discrimination of the first and second discrimination means that communication is performed by using the corresponding one of the voice and image media.
Claim 20
Dependent Claim 31 words
