Abstract

Abstract A method and system are disclosed for generating a completed payment document (117) ready for signature in image form and enabling signature in image form, storing the image and providing a printed copy of the document including the signature. A write input device (20) which displays the image and enables the entry of a signature includes a transparent interactive digitizing element (46) with writing stylus (26), a display module (48) positioned beneath the digitizing element (46) and visible therethrough, and optionally a magnetic stripe reader (32) for providing document-related information for the display. The device is embodied in a system which also includes a point of sale terminal (62), a printer (22) for printing records of transactions processed by the system and a controller (64) operatively coupled to other elements of the system.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A system for processing customer transactions, including a terminal device (62) in which item transaction information may be entered, characterized by write input means (20) including transparent digitizer means (46) overlying display means (48), whereby handwritten data may be entered by a customer by writing on said transparent digitizer means (46), and control means (64) operatively coupled to said terminal device (62) and said write input means (20) whereby data entered in said terminal device (62) and handwritten data entered on said digitizer means (46) are combined to form combined data for simultaneous display by said display means (48).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 24 words
A system according to claim 1, characterized by printer means (22) coupled to said control means (64) and adapted to print said combined data.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
A system according to claim 1 or claim 2, characterized in that said write input means (20) includes a magnetic stripe reader (32) adapted to read data from a record member, such data read from said record member being provided to said display means (48) for display as part of said combined data.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 50 words
A system according to any one of the preceding claims, including a stylus (26) adapted for use in writing by a customer on said transparent digitizer means (46) means, the movements of said stylus (26) on said transparent digitizer means (46) being instantaneously reproduced graphically on said display means (48).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 64 words
A system according to claim 4, characterized in that said control means (64) is adapted to cause an image of a document (117) to appear on said display means (48), and in that said stylus (26) is adapted to be moved by said customer over said transparent digitizer means (46) in the form of a signature in an appropriate location in said document (117).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 22 words
A system according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that said display means (46) is a liquid crystal display.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 72 words
A method for processing customer transactions, including the step of entering transaction information in a terminal device (62), characterized by the steps of: providing a write input means (20) including transparent digitizer means (46) overlying display means (48); entering handwritten information on said digitizer means (46); and displaying on said display means (48) a representation of the combined information entered in said terminal device (62) and entered on said digitizer means (46).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method according to claim 7, characterized by the steps of: printing said combined information by printing means (22); and storing an electronic record of said combined data in storage means.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A method according to claim 7 or claim 8, characterized by the step of entering further information forming part of said combined information by magnetically sensing data recorded on a record card.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 47 words
A method according to any one of claims 7 to 9, characterized in that said handwritten information is entered on said transparent digitizer means (46) by a stylus (26) electrically coupled thereto, and in that the entered handwritten information is reproduced graphically on said display means (48).
