Abstract

Abstract A safety device for a syringe needle 68 has a base 2 which is mounted on the nose 62 of the syringe 60 and on which the hub 66 of the needle is received. A housing 14 is coupled at one end to the base 2 by a flexible hinge 12 so that the housing can be swung over the needle 68 and held in place by hooks 40, 42 within the housing which catch the needle. The other end of the housing 14 has an end cap 30 which is coupled with the main body of the housing by an accordion shape compressible section 27. The end cap 30 contains an elastomeric material 32 so that the cap can be pushed down towards the base 2 causing the tip 33 of the needle to penetrate the elastomeric material and be sealed and gripped by it.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 85 words
A safety device for use with a needle, the device including a base for connecting the needle to a syringe, and a housing having one end flexibly coupled to the base so that it can be pivoted about the base to a position in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the needle for enveloping the needle, characterised in that device has a compressible section (27, 80) that can be compressed to displace the other end (30) of the housing (14) towards the base (2).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
A safety device for use with a needle, the device including a base for connecting the needle to a syringe, and a housing having one end flexibly coupled to the base so that it can be pivoted about the base to a position in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the needle for enveloping the needle, characterised in that device has a compressible section (27, 80) that can be compressed to displace the other end (30) of the housing (14) towards the base (2).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A safety device according to Claim 1, characterised in that the other end (30) of the housing (14) includes a material (37) which is penetrated by the tip (35) of the needle (68) when the other end (30) is displaced towards the base (2).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
A safety device according to Claim 2, characterised in that the material (37) is an elastomeric material which substantially seals the tip (35) of the needle (68) when penetrated by the tip of the needle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
A safety device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the housing (14) includes at least one device (40, 42) for retaining the needle (68) within the housing (14) once the housing has been pivoted into alignment with the needle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 59 words
A safety device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the one end (28) of the housing is provided by a first section (25) of the housing, that the other end (30) is provided by a second section of the housing, and that the compressible section (27) is located intermediate the first and second sections.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A safety device according to Claim 5, characterised in that the compressible section (27) comprises a semi-enclosed extension.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
A safety device according to any one of Claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the compressible section (80) is located intermediate the housing (14) and the base (2).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 32 words
A safety device according to Claim 7, characterised in that the compressible section is provided by a compressible, flexible hinge (80) by which the housing (14) is attached to the base (2).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A safety device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the compressible section (27, 80) is of accordion shape.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 56 words
A safety device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the base (2) includes a male projection (4) adapted for insertion into and coupling with a hub (66) of the needle, and that the base (2) includes a female receptacle (16) adapted to receive an ejection end (62) of the syringe (60).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 50 words
A safety device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the base (2) includes a snout (50) having a through bore (52) in communication with the needle (68), and that the snout (50) is adapted to extend within an ejection end (62) of the syringe (60).
