Claim 1
Independent Claim 99 words
A method for reducing production of a protein product of an endogenous gene in a plant, said protein affecting a phenotypic trait in the plant, said method comprising the steps of: growing plants from a plant cell transformed with a polynucleotide comprising a DNA segment under operational control of a promoter, whereby said segment is transcribed in the cell in the sense orientation and wherein said DNA segment has a sequence complementary to mRNA encoded by said endogenous gene; and identifying a plant that exhibits a phenotypic change by screening the resulting plants for modification of the phenotypic trait.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 12 words

Claim 6
Independent Claim 18 words
A method of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein said promoter is exogenous to said plant.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 30 words
A method of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein said segment transcripts have at least 80%, optionally 95% to 100% sequence identity to transcripts of said endogenous gene.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 18 words
A method of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said polynucleotide is in a DNA vector.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 19 words
A method of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein said polynucleotide is in a Ti plasmid vector.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 34 words

A method of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein said segment is at least about 50 nucleotides in length.
Claim 12
Independent Claim 114 words
A method for producing a plant exhibiting at least one modified phenotypic trait resulting from reduced expression of an endogenous gene in said plant, comprising: transforming plant cells with a polynucleotide to produce transgenote cells, the polynucleotide comprising a promoter operably linked to a DNA segment such that transcripts of the segment are produced in the sense orientation in the transgenote cells, which segment transcripts have at least 65% sequence identity to transcripts of said endogenous gene; growing plants from one or more of said transgenote cells, wherein production of mRNA encoded by the endogenous gene is reduced in one or more of the plants; and selecting a plant exhibiting said modified phenotypic trait.
Claim 13

A method of claim 12 further defined by the specific feature(s) of any one of claims 2 to 11.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 46 words
The use of a vector in transforming plant cells and reducing expression in said cells of an endogenous gene, said vector comprising at least a portion of the sequence of said gene operably linked to a promoter and transcribable to produce mRNA in the sense orientation.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 51 words
The use of a DNA sequence in modifying the genome of a plant to reduce expression of a pre-existing gene of said plant, which sequence is capable of transcription in a sense orientation with respect to said pre-existing gene and comprises a sequence complementary to mRNA encoded by said pre-existing gene.
Claim 16
