Abstract
Abstract This invention relates generally to communications with distributed nodes in a computer network, and more specifically with change management in a computer network. An interface architecture allows an entry point in a systems network architecture (SNA) network to divide the SNA management services (SNA/MS) and SNA file services (SNA/FS) between the entry point and a sub-entry point. By off-loading part of the work from the entry point, less SNA entry point resources are used and the focal point of the SNA network is not affected at all. Code can now be sent and distributed to remote network systems. <IMAGE>

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
47 words
The computer network of claim 1 or 2 wherein said interface means includes pass-through means for transmitting a subset of a control and data communication from said receiver node to at least one of said plurality of applications without changing the format and protocol of said subset.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
39 words
The computer network of claim 3 wherein said interface means includes identifier means for adding additional information to said subset of said control and data communication which is transmitted to said at least one of said plurality of applications.
Claim 5

The computer network of anyone of claims 1 to 5 wherein said receiver node includes transmittal means for sending a response communication back to said sender node, and wherein said response message received from said at least one of said plurality of applications is included as a subset of said response communication.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
71 words
The computer network of claim 1 or anyone of claims 2 to 6 wherein said control and data communications include microcode changes to be installed in said plurality of applications, and wherein said receiver node is unattended, and wherein said receiver node includes transmittal means for sending a response communication back to said sender node indicating whether or not said microcode changes had been successfully installed in said plurality of applications.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
28 words
The computer network of claim 1 or anyone of claims 2 to 7 which further includes a single telecommunications line for connecting said receiver node to the network.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
25 words
The computer network of claim 1 or anyone of claims 2 to 8 wherein said predetermined format and protocol are in accordance with SNA architecture.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
144 words
A method of transmitting data objects in a computer network from a central site to a plurality of target systems in accordance with a predetermined format and protocol, in which each target system has an entry point for receiving the data objects in accordance with a predetermined format and protocol, including the steps of: sending a data object to at least one of said plurality of target systems; receiving said data object at an entry point for said at least one of said plurality of target systems; partially processing a portion of said data object at said entry point; passing a subset of said data object which was not partially processed by said entry point to a sub-entry point; and transmitting a response message from said sub-entry point through said entry point back to the central site indicating the status of the data object.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
32 words
The method of claim 10 wherein said sending step includes sending change management data objects to said plurality of target systems, or to only certain ones of said plurality of target systems.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
24 words
The method of claim 10 or 11 wherein said sending step includes sending microcode changes which are applicable to said plurality of target systems.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
44 words
The method of claim 10, 11 or 12 wherein said passing step includes sending additional identifier information from said entry point to said sub-entry point, and wherein said transmitting step includes sending further identifier information from said sub-entry point back to said entry point.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
158 words
An interface architecture in a computer network for allowing a plurality of sub-entry points to communicate with the network through a single entry point, including: a predetermined network architecture, preferably based on SNA, having a format and protocol for control and data objects to be transmitted over the network; catcher means at the single entry point for receiving said control and data objects and for transferring a portion of said control and data objects in accordance with said format and protocol to the plurality of sub-entry points without processing said portion of said control and data objects at said single entry point; interface means interconnected between said single entry point and said plurality of sub-entry points for generating additional identifiers associated with said control and data objects for conveying information between said single entry point and said plurality of sub-entry points; and a communication path between said single entry point and each of said plurality of sub-entry points.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
52 words
The interface architecture of claim 14 wherein said predetermined network architecture includes distribution tasks and change management tasks, especially microcode changes, and wherein said catcher means handles said distribution tasks, and wherein said portion of said control and data objects transferred to said plurality of sub-entry points includes said change management tasks.
Claim 16
