Abstract

Abstract For adjusting grey scales, picture electrodes in the one direction (on the one supporting plate) are arranged in k sub-electrodes in accordance with a ratio 1 : 2 :....: 2 k-1 , k ≧ 2 and in the other direction (on the other supporting plate) in r sub-electrodes in accordance with 2 rk : 2 (r-1)k :....: 2 k : 1. Notably at r = 2 and strip-shaped electrodes which cross each other a maximum number of grey scales can be realised with a minimum number of connections.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A device comprising at least a cell with an electro-optical medium between two supporting plates provided with drive electrodes or picture electrodes, a drive electrode or picture electrode on one of the supporting plates being divided into k sub-electrodes having a surface ratio of 1 : 2 :....: 2 k-1 , k ≧ 2, characterized in that the drive electrode or picture electrode on the other supporting plate is divided into r sub-electrodes having a surface ratio of at least 2 (r-1)k :....: 2 k : 1, r ≧ 2.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
A display device comprising a device as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises a plurality of display cells at the area of crossings of strip-shaped row and column electrodes, the column electrodes being divided into k strip-shaped sub-electrodes having a width ratio of 1 : 2 :....: 2 k-1 , k ≧ 2 and the row electrodes being divided at least at the area of the crossings into two strip-shaped sub-electrodes having a width ratio of at least 2 k : 1.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
A device as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that r = 2.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 42 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 2 or 3, characterized in that a column electrode comprises at least three sub-electrodes the narrowest and widest of which are passed to the exterior at one and the same side of the cross-bar system.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 33 words
A display device as claimed in Claim 2, 3 or 4, characterized in that each strip-shaped sub-electrode of a row electrode is passed to the exterior at different sides of the cross-bar system.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 25 words
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, characterized in that at least one sub-electrode is located between parts of other sub-electrodes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device as claimed in Claim 6, characterized in that a sub-electrode is located between parts of the sub-electrode having the larger surface but one.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 25 words
A device as claimed in Claim 7, characterized in that a sub-electrode which is the next larger in surface size substantially entirely surrounds a sub-electrode.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 23 words
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, characterized in that the electro-optical medium is a ferro-electric liquid crystal material.
