Abstract

Abstract A catheter assembly comprises a tubing comprising a body portion (10) and a hollow needle portion (16) associated therewith, said needle portion having a point (14), at lease one of said body portion and needle portion being fabricated of a liquid crystalline polymer which is a polyether, polyphosphazine, polyxylylene, polysulfone, polyamide, polysiloxane or polyester. Methods for producing the assembly are described. <IMAGE>

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 75 words
A tubing comprising a body portion (10) and a hollow needle portion (16) associated therewith, said needle portion having a point (14); said body portion needle portions being fabricated of liquid crystalline polymer, characterised in that said needle portion is fabricated of a polyether, polyphosphazine, polyxylylene, polysulfone, polyamide, polysiloxane or polyester crystalline polymer which has been shear-thinned to a viscosity which allows it to flow into and fill a long, thin mould, including a point.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 56 words
A tubing as claimed in claim 1 wherein said needle portion (16) is a formed of liquid crystalline polyester which is a polymer or copolymer of an aromatic hydroxy acid and the polymeric reaction product of a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol, wherein at least one of the dicarboxylic acid and glycol includes an aromatic group.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 112 words
A tubing as claimed in claim 1 in which the thermoplastic liquid crystalline polymer has the structure: X ⁅Ar₁ - A - Ar₂ - B - Ar₃⁆ Y   (I) or X ⁅Ar₁ - A - Ar₂⁆ Y   (II) wherein Ar₁, Ar₂ and Ar₃ are each independently an aromatic or a heterocyclic ring; A and B are each independently an oxygen or sulphur atom or an alkyloxy, alkyldioxy, sulfone, carbonyl, oxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkyloxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy or oxyalkylcarbonyl group (wherein at least one of A and B is an oxycarbonyl group) and the term alkyl refers to alkyl group-containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms); and X and Y are each a hydroxy or carboxyl group.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
An assembly as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3 in which the body portion (10)includes a tubing and a hub portion.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 44 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of claims 2-4 in which the body portion (10) is a plastic tubing affixed to the proximal end of a liquid crystalline polymer needle portion (16), the distal end of said needle portion having said point (14).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 48 words
An assembly as claimed in any one of claims 2-4 in which the body portion (10) is a tubing of a first liquid crystalline polymer affixed to the proximal end of a liquid crystalline needle portion (16), the distal end of said needle portion having said point (18).
Claim 7
Independent Claim 70 words
A method for preparing a liquid crystalline polymeric tubing having a point comprising: a) heating a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer to give a melt; b) directing the melt into a tubing mould which includes a point whereby the melt completely fills the mould; c) cooling the melt in the mould whereby the melt solidifies to a tubing having the shape of the mould; and d) removing the tubing the mould.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A method as claimed in claim 7 which includes the step, between steps (a) and (b) forcing the melt under pressure through an orifice whereby the melt decreases in viscosity.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method for preparing a liquid crystalline polymeric tubing as claimed in claim 7 comprising heating a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer to give a melt and extruding said melt through a tubing die.
