Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
89 words
A controlled drug delivery system for placement in a periodontal pocket, comprising; a) a plurality of discrete microparticles, between 10 and 500 microns in diameter, comprising a drug and a polymer containing said drug, wherein when said microparticles are placed in an environment of use, said drug is released at a controlled rate by diffusion of said drug through said polymer; and b) a fluid suspending medium for said microparticles; said drug delivery system remaining active in the periodontal pocket for a period of between one and thirty days.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
94 words
A controlled drug delivery system for placement in a periodontal pocket, comprising; a) a plurality of discrete microparticles, between 10 and 500 microns in diameter, comprising a drug and a polymer containing said drug, said drug being essentially insoluble in said polymer, wherein when said microparticles are placed in an environment of use, said drug is released at a controlled rate by erosion of said polymer; and b) a fluid suspending medium for said microparticles; said drug delivery system remaining active in the periodontal pocket for a period of between one and thirty days.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
99 words
A controlled drug delivery system for placement in a periodontal pocket, comprising; a) a plurality of discrete microparticles, between 10 and 500 microns in a diameter, comprising at least 15 vol% drug dispersed in a polymer, said drug being essentially insoluble in said polymer, wherein when said microparticles are placed in an environment of use, said drug is released at a controlled rate by leaching of said drug from said polymer, and b) a fluid suspending medium for said microparticles; said drug delivery system remaining active in the periodontal pocket for a period of between one and thirty days.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug is a prophylactic agent chosen from calcium and fluoride.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
30 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug is an antiseptic chosen from the group consisting of chlorhexidine and tibezonium iodide.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
31 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug is an antibiotic, preferably chosen from aminoglycosides, macrolides, penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracycline and tetracycline hydrochloride.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
25 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug is a local anaesthetic, preferably lidocaine or procaine.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
29 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug is an anti-inflammatory, preferably chosen from ketorolac, naproxen, diclofenac sodium and flurbiprofen.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
34 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein said drug possesses activity against collagen-destructive enzymes, and is preferably chosen from tetracyclines and sanguinarine, its compounds and derivatives.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
51 words
A drug delivery system as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein said drug is a tissue growth factor, preferably chosen from epidermal growth factors (EGF), human platelet derived TGF-B, endothelial cell growth factors (ECGF), thymocyte-activating factors (TAF), platelet derived growth factors (PDGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), fibronectin and laminin.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
33 words
A method for controlled delivery of a drug to a cavity within the mouth, comprising inserting into said cavity a drug delivery system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein said cavity is a wound, a socket created by tooth extraction, a periodontal pocket or a gingival sulcus.
