Abstract This invention is directed to a polymerizable nematic monomer composition comprised of monomers having the general formula (I): wherein R is CH₃ or H and Y is covalent bond or -CO₂-; characterized in that (A) in 20 to 80 weight % of the monomers of the general formula (I) n is 10, 12 or 14, and (B) in 80 to 20 weight % of the monomers having the general formula (I) n is 4, 6 or 8.
