Abstract

Abstract A method for maintaining a selective document history log within a data processing system having multiple resource objects which are accessible by a plurality of users within the data processing system. A history log is created and associated with each resource object for which documentation of selected activities is desired (64). Next, a list of one or more types of activity is generated and utilized to filter (74) all activities which take place with respect to a particular resource object. Thereafter, documentation of each activity which corresponds to an entry on the list of activities of interest is recorded within the selective document history log (80). In this manner it is possible to accurately record only those activities of interest such that memory space is more efficiently utilized within the document history log. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the system administrator or other manager may limit the authority of a user to establish a document history log.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 80 words
A method in a data processing system of efficiently maintaining a record of activities relating to a selected resource object accessible by a plurality of users within said data processing system, said method being characterized in that it comprises the steps of: creating a history log associated with a selected resource object; specifying particular activities of interest with respect to said selected resource object (64); and recording within said history log the occurrence of only those activities so specified (80).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 28 words
The method according to Claim 1 further characterized in that it includes the step of determining whether or not the occurrence of said particular activities is recordable (66).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method according to Claim 2, further characterized in that it includes the step of generating an indication of the non-recordability of selected activities in the event the occurrence of said selected activities is not recordable (68).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method according to Claim 1, further characterized in that it includes the step of determining whether a particular user has authority to specify particular activities of interest for recording (70).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
