Abstract A surgical device for accurately positioning and cutting a patellar groove in a resected distal femur (11) to receive a patellar track portion of a prosthesis, including a guide element (10) adapted to fit over the distal end of a resected femur (11), having a central opening (23) which exposes the central distal and anterior aspects of the femur, each side of the opening being provided with a track (20,21), extending the length of the patella track, and a cutting tool (30) having a cutting surface (32), preferably convex, adapted to fit into the central opening (23) for the purpose of cutting or abrading a groove into the femur as the tool is moved along the opening. The tool, which is preferably a rotary cutter provided with independently rotatable track-engaging surfaces on each side of the opening is adapted to engage and move along the track.
A surgical device for accurately positioning and cutting a patellar groove in a resected distal femur comprising in combination: a generally U-shaped guide element adapted to fit over the distal end of a resected femur and over the resected anterior and posterior surfaces thereof, there being an elongated continuous central opening in said guide element to expose the central distal and anterior aspects of said resected femur, the anterior and distal surfaces of said element on each side of said opening being provided with a curved track, said tracks being parallel to each other and extending at least the length of the patella track, and a patella cutting tool having a cutting surface adapted to fit into said central opening for the purpose of cutting or abrading a patella track into said femur as said tool is moved along said opening, said tool being provided with a track-engaging surface on each side of said opening, each of which surfaces is adapted to engage and move along one of said tracks.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
25 words
A device according to claim 1 wherein said tracks comprise elongated channels cut into the surfaces of said U-shaped member adjacent to said central opening.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
25 words
A device according to claim 1 wherein said tracks comprise raised rails extending along the surfaces of said guide member adjacent to said central opening.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
A device according to claim 2 wherein said channels are in the form of ledges extending along the edges of said central opening.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
70 words
A device according to claim 1 wherein the distal surface of the guide element on each side of the central opening is provided with a hole suited for attachment of the guide element to the resected distal bone surface by means of bone screws or nails and said holes are positioned to coincide with the position of attachment pegs located on the femoral prosthesis being attached to said resected femur.
