Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
An improved gel scanner comprising means for forming a light beam of predetermined wavelength; a dichroic beam splitter for receiving and directing said beam toward a gel to be scanned; an object lens assembly for receiving said beam and focusing the beam on the gel and collecting fluorescence emission from samples in a selected volume of said gel and directing the emission to said dichroic beam splitter which passes said emission and rejects light at said predetermined wavelength; a spatial filter for receiving and passing emission from said volume while rejecting background and scattered light; means for detecting said passed, emitted light and providing an output signal.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 72 words
The method of detecting fluorescence from DNA fragments on a gel which comprises exciting a volume of said gel with light energy focused thereon by an objective lens assembly to cause said fragments to fluoresce; collecting fluorescent emission from said spot with said objective lens; spatially filtering said emitted light energy; and applying the filtered light energy to a detector to generate an output signal representative of the fluorescence from said fragments.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of Claim 2 in which the excited volume is scanned across the gel to obtain emission from adjacent volumes.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 104 words
A scanner for scanning a gel to detect fluorescence from fluorescence labeled separated sample components comprising means for applying excitation light to a volume in the gel to cause labeled, separated sample components to fluoresce, and for collecting the fluorescence emitted light from said sample of said volume; means for moving said spot and gel relative to one another to scan the gel; a spatial filter for receiving the emitted light and passing light from said sample volume while rejecting background and scattered light, and detecting means for receiving said collective fluorescently emitted light passed by said spatial filter and providing an output signal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A scanner as in Claim 4 wherein said excitation light is at a predetermined wavelength and means are provided for passing the emitted light from the fluorescent emission to said detector while rejecting light at said predetermined wavelength.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A scanner as in Claim 4 or Claim 5 including a laser for supplying said excitation light.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 136 words
An improved scanner for detecting fluorescence from a fluorescence labeled sample material carried by a sample carrier comprising means for forming a light beam having a predetermined wavelength; a dichroic beam splitter for receiving said light and directing it towards an objective lens assembly which receives said beam and focuses the beam at a spot on the sample carrier whereby to cause the sample material to fluoresce and for collecting the fluorescently emitted light from the spot and directing the emitted light to said dichroic beam splitter, said fluorescent light being at a second wavelength and said dichroic beam splitter serving to pass the second wavelength; a spatial filter for receiving light at said second wavelength and passing light emitted from said spot; and means for detecting the passed, emitted light and providing an output signal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
An improved scanner as in Claim 7 including a spatial filter for receiving said light beam and transmitting light to said dichroic beam splitter.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
An improved fluorescence scanner as in Claims 7 or 8 including a spectral filter serving to provide filtered light to said detector.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
An improved fluorescent scanner as in any of Claims 7, 8 or 9 in which the carrier is a gel and the sample is a nucleic acid or derivative thereof.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 25 words
An improved fluorescence scanner as in any of Claims 7, 8, 9 or 10 including means for scanning the light spot relative to the gel.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 26 words
An improved scanner as in any of Claims 7 to 11 including means for receiving said signal and providing a two-dimensional display of said sample material.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 98 words
A scanner for scanning a substrate to detect fluorescence from fluorescence labeled, separated sample components comprising means for applying excitation light to a predetermined location on said substrate to cause labeled separated sample components to fluoresce; a spatial filter; means for collecting the fluorescence emitted light from said location and focusing it onto said spatial filter, said filter serving to pass fluorescently emitted light from said location; detecting means for receiving the light passed by said spatial filter and providing an output signal; and means providing relative movement between said substrate and predetermined location to scan the same.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 38 words
A scanner as in Claim 13 wherein said excitation light is at a predetermined wavelength and means are provided for passing the emitted light from the fluorescent emission to said detector while rejecting light at said predetermined wavelength.
Claim 15
