Abstract

Abstract A radially shrinkable cylindrical sleeve for enclosing a connection or a terminal, respectively, of a medium voltage electrical cable, the cable including a conductor, an insulation surrounding the conductor, and a shielding layer surrounding the insulation. The sleeve comprises an inner layer including a cylindrical end portion at least at one extremity of the sleeve, the end portion being of dielectric material adapted to engage said shielding layer and a second portion of conductive or semi-conductive material located between the ends of the sleeve spaced from the end portion adapted to engage the conductor or a sleeve-shaped connector element interconnecting two conductors. A middle layer of electrically insulating material is bonded to the end portion and median portion and an outer layer of electrically semi-conductive material. The layers are elastomeric and adapted to be retained in a radially expanded state by a removable inner support means, preferably a support core inserted into the sleeve in its radially expanded state.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 164 words
A radially shrinkable cylindrical sleeve for enclosing a connection or a terminal, respectively, or an electrical cable, particularly of a medium voltage cable, the cable including a conductor, an insulation surrounding said conductor, and a shielding layer surrounding said insulation, said sleeve comprising an inner layer including a cylindrical portion of conductive or semi-conductive material located between the ends of said sleeve and adapted to engage said conductor and a sleeve-shaped connector element and the adjacent insulation, a middle layer of electrically insulating material bonded to an outer layer of electrically semi-conductive material to form an integral sleeve, said layers consist of an elastic and permanent flexible material adapted to be retained in a radially expanded state by a suitable support means, and said layers being elastically stretched to fit on a removable inner support means when in its radially expanded state and said sleeve radially shrinks onto a said cable connection or a said cable termination, respectively, upon removal of said support means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 35 words
Sleeve according to claim 1, wherein said sleeve inner layer comprises a cylindrical end portion at least at one extremity of said sleeve which end portion is embedded in the material of the middle layer.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
The sleeve according to claim 2, wherein the inner diameter of said end portion is equal to that of said middle layer.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
The sleeve according to claim 1, wherein said layers are formed by injection molding.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The sleeve according to claim 1, wherein said medium layer is made of liquid silicone rubber.

Dependent Claim 19 words
The sleeve according to claim 1, wherein said conductive and semi-conductive portion are of Vinyl-Methyl-Silicon vulcanized at high temperature.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
The sleeve according to claim 2, wherein said end portion is semi-conductive Vinyl-Methyl-Silicon vulcanized at high temperature including means for increasing the dielectric constant, particularly dustlike black carbon.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The sleeve according to claim 1, wherein the outer layer is of semi-conductive liquid silicone-rubber.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
The sleeve according to claim 2, wherein the relative dielectric constant of said end portion is between 15 and 25, preferably about 15.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
The sleeve according to claim 2, wherein the dissipating factor of said end portion is below 0.1.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
The sleeve according to claim 1, wherein the basic polymer for said layers is one of an ethylene propylene diene mixed polymer (EPDM) and an ethylene propylene mixed polymer (EPM).
