A multi-media terminal apparatus which is connected to other multi-media terminal apparatuses via a transmission line having a plurality of channels, and has a plurality of processing units for controlling various multi-media processing operations, comprising: communication control means for controlling communications with other multi-media terminal apparatuses connected to said transmission line via said plurality of channels; encoding/decoding means for encoding or decoding signals transmitted or received by said communication control means; connection switching means for enabling connections among said communication control means and appropriate units of said plurality of processing units; instruction input means for inputting an instruction from an operator; detection means for detecting the instruction from said instruction input means, and an instruction from another multi-media terminal apparatus received through a first channel consisting of at least one of said plurality of channels; and switching control means for controlling said connection switching means on the basis of the instructions detected by said detection means.
