Abstract

Abstract A point-of-sale data terminal device (20) includes an optical scanning unit mounted (24,30) in one of the wall portions (22,28) of the terminal device. In one embodiment of the invention, the scanning unit (24) includes a support member (32) which extends outwardly from and is rotatably mounted in the wall portion (22) enabling the support member (32) to be orientated in a plurality of scanning positions. In a second embodiment of the invention, one or more scanning units (24,20) are mounted flush with a wall portion (22,28) to project scanning light beams in a vertical and/or horizontal direction outwardly from the terminal device (20).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 58 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device having a wall portion (22,28), characterized in that an optical scanning means (24,30) is mounted in said wall portion (22,28) and is adapted to project scanning light beams outwardly from said data terminal device (20), whereby an object positioned adjacent said optical scanning means (24,30) may be scanned by said scanning light beams.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 58 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device having a wall portion (22,28), characterized in that an optical scanning means (24,30) is mounted in said wall portion (22,28) and is adapted to project scanning light beams outwardly from said data terminal device (20), whereby an object positioned adjacent said optical scanning means (24,30) may be scanned by said scanning light beams.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device according to claim 1, characterized in that optical scanning means (24,30) is mounted flush with the surface of said wall portion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device according to claim 1, characterized in that said optical scanning means (24) includes a housing member (32) which contains an optical scanning device (34), and which is rotatably mounted in said wall portion (22,38), whereby said scanning light beams may be projected outwardly in a selectable scanning direction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 37 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device according to claim 3, characterized in that said housing member (32) is provided with an annular beaming member (36) which cooperates with a socket member (40) disposed in said wall portion (22,38).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a further optical scanning means (24,30) is mounted in a further wall portion (22,28) of said data terminal device (20).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
A point-of-sale data terminal device according to claim 5, characterized in that said wall portion is a side wall portion (22) and said further wall portion is an upper wall portion (28), whereby scanning light beams may be projected generally horizontally and generally upwardly, respectively.
