A color scanner of a flat bed type, where an original received on an original cassette is read optically by plane scanning and where the read data is suitably processed and recorded on a photosensitive material to make a halftoned film or a printing mask plate, comprising the steps of; performing said plane scanning by pre-scanning for rough scanning and main scanning for detailed scanning, storing the read data obtained from said pre-scanning in a memory portion, displaying an image of said original image on a display portion according to instructions, automatically or manually setting condition parameters for data processing by using said stored data, processing the read data of said main scanning on the basis of said condition parameters, and carrying out an output image at a high speed and effectively by evaluating a relationship between said original and said photosensitive material so as to produce said halftoned film or said printing mask plates.
