Abstract

Abstract A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger (1) having an improved compressible garment gripping means. The hanger has a pair of jaws (14,15) pivotally joined from movement toward and away from each other for receiving and clamping a garment. A gripping pad (20) secured to the inwardly directed face of each of the jaws is injection moulded under heat and pressure and forms a molecularly interlocking polymer network between the polymer of the pad and the polymer of that portion of the jaws of the hanger exposed to the pad during moulding so that the pads will not separate from the hanger during repeated subsequent use even with heavy clothing.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 16
Claim 1
Independent Claim 122 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger (1) having garment gripping means comprising a pair of jaws (14,15) pivotally joined whereby they can be moved toward and away from each other for receiving and clamping a garment seated between them, the inwardly directed face of each of said jaws having a garment engaging pad (20), characterised in that the pads (20) are injection moulded under heat and pressure and during moulding form a permanent bond at the boundary between the polymers of the pad and the hanger body which bond is not subject to rupture due to tension or shear forces of which the hanger body is capable of withstanding, the pads having a garment engaging surface having a high coefficient of friction.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 122 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 79 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to claim 1 in which the bond between the pads and the hanger's jaws is formed while the plastic for the pad is being injected in liquid form into the mould cavity (43) and the previously injected plastic forming the hanger's jaws has been allowed to cool only enough to avoid any significant tendency to lose its geometry prior to being contacted and supported by the material injected to form the pads.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 100 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the pad (20) extends substantially the full width of the respective jaw (14,15) and a minor portion of the jaw's length, the jaw having a dam-forming ridge (40) extending across the jaw to define the edge of the pad remote from the end of the jaw, the ridge extending toward the free face of the pad a major portion of the thickness of the pad for limiting the migration of the pad polymer between the mould and the plastic forming the jaws of the hanger.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 52 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to claim 3 in which the ridges (40) are wedge-shaped in cross section with their apices extending toward the free faces of the pads and provide a thin cross section for rapid setting of the plastic from which the body of the hanger is moulded.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 32 words
The moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to claim 3 or claim 4 in which the height of the ridges (40) is approximately one half of the thickness of the adjacent pad.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to any of claims 1 to 5 in which the pad is of a resilient thermoplastic rubber having a share of approximately 47.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 35 words
A moulded plastic garment clamping hanger according to any of claims 1 to 6 in which the resin from which the pads is moulded has a substantially higher injection temperature than that of the body.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 137 words
A method of making a hanger (1) having a pair of garment clamping jaws (14,15) at least one of which has a garment gripping pad (20), which method includes providing a mould (24) having a hanger forming cavity (25), characterised by providing a pad forming cavity (43) adjacent the cavity forming a jaw, occupying the pad forming cavity with a cam (26), injecting a thermoplastic resin material into the hanger forming cavity while the pad forming cavity is occupied by the cam, allowing the injected material to set just enough to retain its geometric integrity in the area of the cam, withdrawing the cam, and injecting a pad forming synthetic rubber resin into the pad cavity under heat and pressure sufficient to form a shear resistant bond between the pad and clamping jaw of the hanger body.
Claim 10
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 90 words
A method of making a hanger according to claim 8 in which the hanger body resin is injected at a temperature of about 182 o C (360°F) and the pad forming resin at a temperature of about 238 o C (460°F), allowing a dwell time between completion of injection of the hanger body forming resin and initiation of the injection of the pad forming resin of at least four seconds, and maintaining a positive pressure on the hanger body forming resin through the entire period between injection and mould opening.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 33 words
A method of making a hanger according to claim 9 in which no external pressure is applied to the pad forming resin after the pad forming cavity of the mould has been filled.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 44 words
A method of making a hanger according to any of claim 8 to 10 in which the first thermoplastic material is polypropylene and the second thermoplastic material is a synthetic rubber of the type having an ethylene butylene centre block to provide a bond.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 35 words
A method of making a hanger according to any of claims 8 to 10 in which the first thermoplastic material is styrene and the second thermoplastic material is a synthetic rubber of butadiene or isoprene.
Claim 15
Independent Claim 63 words
A method of making a hanger according to any of claims 8 to 12 which includes injecting the pad forming resin at a temperature high enough to cause the contacted surface portion of the resin forming the jaws to melt and the resins of both the jaws and the pads to become fused at the boundary where the two resins are in contact.
Claim 16
Independent Claim 46 words
A method of making a hanger according to any of claims 8 to 13 in which the pad forming resin is injected at a temperature of approximately 55.5 o C above the melting point of the resin from which the hanger body and jaws are formed.
