Abstract
Abstract An obturator, suitable for use with a polymeric catheter comprises a substantially nonhydrophilic rod coated with a substantially hydrophilic polyurethane, the hydrophilic polyurethane being capable of absorbing an aqueous liquid and expanding to form a seal when inserted into a catheter. Suitably the hydrophilic urethane has a medicinal agent bulk distributed therein. The invention also provides an assembly comprising a polymeric catheter and an obturator of the invention, the obturator being dimensioned to fit in the catheter and the catheter containing a radiopaque agent.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
33 words
An obturator comprising a substantially nonhydrophilic rod coated with a substantially hydrophilic polyurethane, the hydrophilic polyurethane being capable of absorbing a liquid and expanding to form a seal when inserted into a catheter.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
33 words
An obturator comprising a substantially nonhydrophilic rod coated with a substantially hydrophilic polyurethane, the hydrophilic polyurethane being capable of absorbing a liquid and expanding to form a seal when inserted into a catheter.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
49 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 1 in which the hydrophilic polyurethane coating has a medicinal agent bulk distributed therein whereby the polyurethane is capable of absorbing an aqueous liquid, releasing the medicinal agent and expanding to form a seal when the coated rod is inserted into a catheter.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the rod is a metal rod or a polymeric rod.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
25 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 3 in which the polymeric rod is formed of a polyolefin, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyester, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride or liquid crystals.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
29 words
An obturator as claimed in any one of the preceding claims in which the hydrophilic polyurethane comprises reaction product of a diisocyanate, polyethyle oxide glycol and a chain extender.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
22 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 5 in which the diisocyanate is 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 3,3′-diphenyl methane diisocyanate, isophorone diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
24 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 6 in which the polyurethane comprises the reaction product of 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, polyethylene oxide glycol and butane diol.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 2 in which the medicinal agent is a heparinoid.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
33 words
An obturator as claimed in claim 2 in which the medicinal agent is antithrombogenic agent selected from prostaglandins, urokinase, streptokinases, tissue plasminogen activators, heparins, heparin salts, and complexes of heparin with quaternary salts.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
32 words
An assembly comprising a polymer catheter and an obturator dimensioned? to fit therein, the obturator being as defined in any one of the preceding claims and the catheter containing a radiopaque agent.
