Abstract
Abstract A method of preserving porcine heart valves (16) so that they may be incorporated into prosthetic heart valves for human implant. During fixation, the leaflets of the valves are repeatedly flexed throughout their full range of motion. Flexing of the leaflets continues throughout fixation, and is accomplished by providing for alternating fluid flow through the valve from the inflow and outflow sides sufficient to cause the leaflets to fully open and close.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
47 words
A method of preserving a porcine heart valve, comprising exposing said valve to a fixative solution while alternating fluid flow of said fixative solution through said vlave in a fashion to cause complete opening and complete closing of said valve due to fluid flow of said fixative.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
47 words
A method of preserving a porcine heart valve, comprising exposing said valve to a fixative solution while alternating fluid flow of said fixative solution through said vlave in a fashion to cause complete opening and complete closing of said valve due to fluid flow of said fixative.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method according to claim 1 wherein said fluid flow through said valve continues throughout the fixation process.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said fixative solution comprises glutaraldehyde.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
49 words
A method according to claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said method comprises mounting said valve to a plate containing an orifice, said orifice being in fluid communication with said valve and wherein said plate is oscillated within said fixative to cause said alternating fluid flow through said valve.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
36 words
A method according to claim wherein said plate is oscillated between a first position in which said valve is completely submerged within said fixative and a second position wherein said valve emerges from said fixative solution.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
19 words
A method according to any preceding claim which is continued for a period of at least about three days.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
29 words
A method according to any preceding claim wherein the alternating fluid flow causes opening and closing of said valve at a frequency within the range of normal heart rhythm.
Claim 9
Independent Claim
58 words
A method according to any preceding claim wherein said valve has aortic tissue attached at each end, comprising fitting the aorta at one end over a mandrel having a lumen, fitting a ring around the aorta at the other end, folding the aortic tissue at said other end back outside the ring, and retaining it with a second ring.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
40 words
A method of preserving a porcine heart valve, comprising immersing it in a body of fixative solution and moving it relative to the body of solution whereby to cause alternately and repeatedly complete opening and complete closing of the valve.
Claim 11
Independent Claim
40 words
A method of preserving a porcine heart valve, comprising immersing it in a body of fixative solution and moving it relative to the body of solution whereby to cause alternately and repeatedly complete opening and complete closing of the valve.
