Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for converting a video signal to a photographic film image comprises a television standards converter (12) for deriving from an input video signal, which may be a high definition video signal, a motion compensated digital video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second, a video signal recorder (14) for recording the digital video signal, a digital-to-analogue converter (34) for converting the digital video signal after reproduction to a analogue video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second, and an electron beam recorder (35) to which the analogue video signal is supplied to record the content of the analogue video signal on photographic film.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A method of converting a video signal to a photographic film image, the method comprising the steps of: deriving from an input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; recording said digital video signal on a video signal recorder (14); reproducing said digital video signal; digital-to-analogue converting said reproduced digital video signal to form an analogue video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; and supplying said analogue video signal to a photographic recorder (35) to record the content of said analogue video signal on photographic film.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 98 words
A method of converting a video signal to a photographic film image, the method comprising the steps of: deriving from an input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; recording said digital video signal on a video signal recorder (14); reproducing said digital video signal; digital-to-analogue converting said reproduced digital video signal to form an analogue video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; and supplying said analogue video signal to a photographic recorder (35) to record the content of said analogue video signal on photographic film.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 61 words
A method according to claim 1 comprising the step of deriving from said input video signal a motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal in which the progressive scan frames are at the same rate as the input interlaced scan fields in said input video signal, and deriving said motion compensated digital video signal from said motion adapted digital video signal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 74 words
A method according to claim 2 wherein blocks in a first frame of said motion adapted digital video signal are each compared with a plurality of blocks in the following frame of said motion adapted digital video signal for deriving motion vectors representing the motion of the content of respective said blocks between said first frame and said following frame, and said motion vectors are used in deriving said motion compensated digital video signal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 wherein said photographic recorder (35) is an electron beam recorder (35).
Claim 6
Independent Claim 21 words
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein said input video signal is a high definition video signal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 101 words
Apparatus for converting a video signal to a photographic film image, the apparatus comprising: a television standards converter (12) for deriving from an input video signal a motion compensated digital video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; a video signal recorder (14) for recording said digital video signal; a digital-to-analogue converter (34) for converting said digital video signal after reproduction to an analogue video signal corresponding to 24 progressive scan frames per second; and a photographic recorder (35) to which said analogue video signal is supplied to record the content of said analogue video signal on photographic film.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 71 words
Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said television standards converter (12) comprises means (42) for deriving from said input video signal a motion adapted progressive scan digital video signal in which the progressive scan frames are at the same rate as input interlaced scan fields in said input video signal, and means (43 to 48) for deriving said motion compensated digital video signal from said motion adapted scan digital video signal.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 88 words
Apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said television standards converter (12) comprises means (43) for comparing blocks in a first frame of said motion adapted digital video signal with a plurality of blocks in the following frame of said motion adapted digital video signal for deriving motion vectors representing the motion of the content of respective said blocks between said first frame and said following frame, and means (44) for deriving in dependence on said comparison, motion vectors for use in deriving said motion compensated digital video signal.
