Abstract A silver halide photographic material is disclosed, which comprises (a) at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer containing a hydrazine derivative and (b) a hydrophilic colloid layer which is different from the light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and which contains a redox compound capable of releasing a development inhibitor as a result of oxidation.

A silver halide photographic material as in claim 1, wherein said redox compound is represented by the general formula (I): wherein both A 1 and A 2 represent hydrogen atoms, or one represents a hydrogen atom and the other represents a sulfinic acid residual group or (wherein Ro represents an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group or an aryloxy group, and t represents 1 or 2); Time represents a divalent linking group; t represents 0 or 1; PUG represents a development inhibitor; V represents a carbonyl group, a sulfonyl group, a sulfoxy group, (wherein R 1 represents an alkoxy group or an aryloxy group), an iminomethylene group or a thiocarbonyl group; and R represents an aliphatic group, an aromatic group or a heterocyclic group.
