Abstract A control system for controlling an internal combustion engine (1) having intake (2) and exhaust valves and a supply unit (11) for supplying fuel to an intake port includes electromagnetic actuator means (22,24,25) for selectively opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves. The timing and extent of opening of the intake and exhaust valves and the timing and amount of fuel to be injected, are calculated based on engine load conditions and drive/control signals are applied to the electromagnetic actuator means (22,24,25) and the fuel supply unit (11) based on the respective calculations. in order to control the ratio of the air-fuel mixture introduced into the intake port.
A control system for controlling an internal combustion engine (1) having intake (2) and exhaust valves and a supply unit (11) for supplying fuel to an intake port which is openable and closable by the intake valve, the control system comprising: electromagnetic actuator means (22,24,25) for selectively opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves; a fuel injection nozzle (12) for injecting fuel from the fuel supply unit into the intake port; an engine load sensor (41) for detecting the load on the engine; a crankshaft angle sensor (13) for detecting the angular position of the crankshaft of the engine; calculating means (5), for calculating the timing and extent of opening of the intake and exhaust valves and the timing and amount of fuel to be injected, based on signals from the engine load sensor (41) and the crankshaft angle sensor (13); and control means (5) for applying drive signals to the electromagnetic actuator means (22,24,25) and a control signal to the fuel supply unit (11), based on the respective calculations of the calculating means.
