Abstract

Abstract A control arrangement (10) for an electrical charging system for selectively connecting alternator means (18) producing charging current at each of six outputs (22,26,30,22′,26′,30′) to the output of a first battery (34) and the output of a second battery (46) serially connected to the first battery (34), comprises a plurality of switchable full wave bridge rectifiers (78) for connecting each of the alternator outputs to the second battery output (50) so that the second battery (46) is charged. The rectifiers (78) are switchably connectible to the first battery output (38) so that the first battery (34) is charged. The arrangement also includes a switching circuit (74) for switching first one, and then the next of each of the switchable circuits as the voltage across the first battery (34) is increasingly less than the voltage across the second battery (46) so that the rate of charging of the first battery (34) is determined by the amount the voltage across the first battery (34) is less than the voltage across the second battery (46).

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
An electrical charging system control arrangement (10) for selectively connecting alternator means (18) for producing charging current at each of at least two outputs (22,26,30) to a first battery (34) and a second battery (46) serially connected to the first battery (34), characterised by a plurality of switchable means (70) for connecting each of the alternator means outputs (22,26,30) to the second battery (46) so that the second battery (46) is charged by the alternator means (18), said switchable means (70) being switchably connectible to the first battery (34) so that the first battery (34) is charged by the alternator means (18), and switching means (74) for switching first one, and then the next of each of said switchable means (70) as the voltage across the first battery is increasingly less than the voltage across the second battery so that the amount of charging of the first battery is determined by the amount by which the voltage across the first battery is less than the voltage across the second battery.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 82 words
An arrangement as claimed in Claim 1, characterised in that said plurality of switchable means (70) comprises a first plurality of full wave bridge rectifiers (78), each of which is connected to a different one of the alternator means outputs (22,26,30) and to the second battery (46), and a second plurality of full wave bridge rectifiers (80) each of which is connected to a different one of the alternator means outputs (22,26,30), and which is switchably connectible to the first battery (34).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 46 words
An arrangement as claimed in Claim 2, characterised in that each of said second plurality of full wave bridge rectifiers (80) includes a controllable unidirectional current carrying device (90) connected to a different one of the alternator means outputs (22,26,30) and to the first battery (34).
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 121 words
An arrangement as claimed in Claim 3, characterised in that said switching means (74) comprises comparing means (98) connected to each of the first battery (34) and the second battery (46) for comparing the voltage across the first battery (34) with the voltage across the second battery (46), and means (14) connected to and responsive to the comparing means (98) for turning on one, and then the next of each of said controllable current carrying devices (90) as the amount by which the voltage across the first battery (34) is less than the voltage across the second battery (46) increases, so that the alternator means outputs (22,26,30) are sequentially connected to the first battery (34) to charge the first battery (34).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 123 words
An arrangement as claimed in Claim 4, characterised in that said comparing means (98) produces a voltage signal the magnitude of which is proportional to the difference between the actual difference and the desired difference between the voltage of the first battery (34) and the voltage of the second battery (46), and wherein said means (114) responsive to said comparing means (98) comprises means (118) serially connected one to another for incrementally reducing the voltage signal, and trigger means (122) connected to the output of each of said serially connected means (118) and connected to a different one of each of said controllable current carrying devices (90) and responsive to a minimum voltage level for turning on its respective current carrying device (90).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 129 words
An electrical charging system control arrangement as claimed in any preceding claim, characterised in that said alternator means (18) supplies current at each of at least three outputs (22,26,30) to the first battery (34) at a first voltage and the second battery (46) at a second voltage, said switching means (74) switching first one, then the next, and then the next of each of said switchable means (70) as the ratio of the voltage of the second battery (46) compared with the voltage of the first battery (34) is reduced, so that the rate of charging of the first battery (34) is determined by the amount of the reduction of the ratio of the voltage of the second battery (46) compared with the voltage of the first battery (34).
