Hair care compositions

Claim 2

A hair care composition characterized in that it com­prises from 0.05% to 10.0%, preferably from 0.05% to 7.0%, of a nonrigid silicone gum having a viscosity of from 100,000 centi­stoke to 300,000,000 centistoke, preferably from 1,000,000 centi­stoke to 20,000,000 centistoke; said gum having dispersed therein from 0.01% to 8.0%, preferably from 0.01% to 5.0%, by weight of the composition, of unsolubilized particulate matter which will not interact with the silicone gum.

Claim 3

The composition of Claim 1 wherein the unsolubilized particulate matter is selected from octyl acrylamide/acrylate/­butylaminoethyl methacrylate polymer; aluminum starch octenyl succinate; polyvinyl methyl ether maleic anhydride copolymer; acrylate/acrylamide copolymer; vinyl acetate/crotonic acid co­polymer; titanium dioxide; calcium carbonate; talc and mixtures thereof.

Claim 4

The composition of Claim 2 wherein the unsolubilized particulate matter has an average particle size of from 0.1µ to 15,0µ.

Claim 5

The composition of Claim 3 wherein the nonrigid silicone gum is polydimethylsiloxane gum having a viscosity of from 1,000,000 centistoke to 20,000,000 centistoke, and the unsolu­bilized particulate matter is an octylacrylamide/acrylate/butyl­aminoethyl methacrylate copolymer having a particle size of from 0.15µ to 2.0µ.

Claim 6

The composition of Claim 4 having a pH of from 3 to 7.

Claim 7

The composition of Claim 5 which additionally comprises from 0.01% to 10% of a volatile carrier, preferably comprising a cyclic silicone containing from 3 to 7 silicon atoms, most prefer­ably comprising from 0.05% to 5% of cyclomethicone.

Claim 8

The composition of Claim 6 which additionally comprises from 0.01% to 10% of a silicone resin.

Claim 9

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7 in the form of a hair tonic which additionally comprises from 0.25% to 7.5% of an emulsifying agent.

Claim 10

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7 in the form of a shampoo which additionally comprises from 10% to 30% of a synthetic surfactant or mixtures thereof, preferably selected from alkyl sulfates, ethoxylated alkyl sulfates and mixtures thereof; and wherein the composition comprises from 0.1% to 4.0% of the nonrigid silicone gum and from 0.01% to 1.0% of the unsolu­bilized particulate matter.

Claim 11

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7 in the form of a conditioner which additionally comprises from 0.1% to 1.0% of a lipid vehicle material, preferably selected from cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, glyceryl mono­stearate, and mixtures thereof; and from 0.05% to 5.0% of a cationic surfactant, preferably a quaternary ammonium compound; and wherein the composition comprises from 0.05% to 2.0% of the nonrigid silicone gum and from 0.01% to 0.5% of the unsolubilized particulate matter.

Claim 12

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7 which is in the form of a hairspray which additionally comprises from 0.25% to 7.5% of an emulsifying agent which will allow for the formation of a microemulsion of the silicone gum material in the hairspray composition, preferably being selected from anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants and mixtures thereof, most preferably being a combination of lauramine oxide and cocamide DEA.

Claim 13

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7, which is in the form of a hairspray, which additionally comprises from 0.05% to 5.0%, preferably from 0.05% to 2.0%, by weight of the composition of a hydrophobically-modified clay agent, prefer­ably selected from quaternium-18-bentonite, quaternium-18-hecto­rite, stearalkonium bentonite, stearalkonium hectorite, and mixtures thereof; and from 20% to 95% of a volatile carrier, preferably a C₁-C₆ alkanol, most preferably ethanol.

Claim 14

The compositions of Claim 12, which additionally com­prise from 0.25% to 20% of a hair holding resin, selected from polyvinyl pyrrolidone, copolymers of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and methylmethacrylate, copolymers of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, copolymers of polyvinyl alcohol and crotonic acid, copolymers of polyvinyl alcohol and maleic an­hydride, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl guar gum, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone/ethylmethacrylate/­methacrylic acid terpolymer, vinyl acetate/crotonic acid/vinyl neodecanoate copolymer, octyl acrylamide acrylates copolymer, monoethyl ester of poly (methyl vinyl ether maleic acid), octyl acrylamide/acrylate/butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymers, and mixtures thereof; preferably from 1% to 20% of a copolymer of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate; wherein the resin is solubilized in the volatile carrier.

Claim 15

The compositions of Claims 12 and 13 which additionally comprise from 3% to 30% of a propellant, preferably selected from trichlorofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, dichlorotetra­fluoroethane, monochlorodifluoro- methane, trichlorotrifluoro­ethane, dimethylether, propane, n-butane, isobutane and mixtures thereof.

Claim 16

A hair care composition according to any of Claims 1-7 which is in a form that is selected from a mousse and a gel.

Claim 17

A process for making the hair care composition of Claim 1 characterized in that it comprises mixing the particulate matter and the silicone gum until the particulate matter is homogeneously dispersed in the gum and has a particle size of from 0.15µ to 2.0µ, and formulating the mixture into a hair care composition which is selected from tonics, shampoos, conditioners, mousses, gels, and hairsprays.
