Abstract

Abstract An improved method for dynamically and centrally managing a teleprocessing network partitions the network into Focal Point (FP) nodes (10, 14) and non-FP (NFP) or serviced nodes (12, 16, 18, 20). Each FP node (10) provides management services to an assigned group of non-FP nodes. The names of the non-FP nodes are maintained in a table called a "sphere of control" (SOC) table at the FP node that services those NFP nodes. As NFP nodes in the SOC table become active, the FP establishes a session with the NFP node and sends it a "Request to be Your FP" message. If the NFP node supports the keys (bit pattern identifying a particular category of management services data) for which authorization is being requested, the NFP node replies positively acknowledging the requestor as its focal point for the specified key. Thereafter, problem messages which are related to the particular type of management services are forwarded to the FP node.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 170 words
An improved method for dynamically and centrally managing a telecommunication network including a plurality of interconnected nodes, said method comprising the steps of: (a) partitioning the network into at least one Focal Point (FP) node (10, 14) and a plurality of Non-Focal Point (NFP) nodes (12, 16, 18, 20), with each FP node assigned to provide management services to a selected group of NFP nodes, (b) at each FP node, maintaining a sphere of control (SOC) table that includes a listing of names of the NFP nodes being serviced by that FP node, (c) at each NFP node, maintaining an FP authorization table with said table at least containing indicia which identifies the FP node, (d) generating and sending from the FP node to active NFP nodes a "Request to be Your Focal Point" message, (e) responding with an "accept request" message only if an NFP node ascertains that the FP node is its primary focal point node, and (f) thereafter, generating and forwarding informational messages to the FP node.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 170 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said informational message include error reports.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 2 further including the step of displaying the error reports at the FP node.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method of claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein the "Request to be Your FP Message" includes an identification code and a type of service code for the FP node (10) and a type of service code which identifies the service the FP node provides.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 43 words
The method of any one of the preceding claims wherein said FP authorization table includes FP name field containing names of FP nodes type of service field with indicia indicating the type of service which a named FP node provides to the node.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 47 words
The method of claim 5 wherein a responding NFP node (12) in step (e) determines that the requesting FP node (10) is the primary servicing node if a type of service code indicia in the "Request to be Your FP Message" indicates that the FP is primary.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 29 words
The method set forth in any one of the preceding claims wherein the network of step (a) is being partitioned into at least two focal point nodes (10, 14).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method set forth in claim 7 further including the steps of designating one of said two focal point nodes as a Backup Focal Point node (14), and establishing communications between the Backup Focal Point node, another Focal Point node and the NFP nodes so that the Backup Focal Point node assumes responsibility for servicing the NFP nodes if said another Focal Point node is disabled.
