Abstract

Abstract A method is disclosed which permits an operator to utilize an application within an associated processor (12) to define various functions for selected keys of a telephone apparatus (10) coupled to the processor. A selected command sequence from the associated processor is coupled to the telephone apparatus and is utilized to identify a particular key and the desired data or telephony function to be associated with that key. Thereafter, a momentary depression of that key will automatically cause the implementation of the desired function without the necessity of repeated keystrokes by the operator. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the selected command sequence may also be utilized to selectively and intermittently energize a light emitting diode associated with the particular key in order to provide a visual indication of the status of the function associated therewith.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 79 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone, wherein said telephone is coupled to an associated processor, said method comprising the steps of transmitting a selected command sequence from said associated processor; receiving said selected command sequence at said telephone; and defining a specific function associated with a particular key of said plurality of keys associated with said telephone in response to said selected command sequence.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 79 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone, wherein said telephone is coupled to an associated processor, said method comprising the steps of transmitting a selected command sequence from said associated processor; receiving said selected command sequence at said telephone; and defining a specific function associated with a particular key of said plurality of keys associated with said telephone in response to said selected command sequence.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone according to Claim 1 wherein said selected command sequence includes an identification of said particular key.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone according to Claim 1 wherein said selected command sequence includes an identification of said specific function.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 46 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone according to Claim 3 wherein said associated processor includes memory means associated therewith and wherein a definition associated with said specific function is stored therein.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 59 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone according to Claim 1 wherein each of said plurality of keys includes a light emitting diode associated therewith and wherein said light emitting diode associated with said particular key is energized in accordance with said selected command sequence.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
A method of defining a specific function associated with a particular key of a plurality of keys associated with a telephone according to Claim 1 wherein said light emitting diode associated with said particular key is energized intermittently in accordance with said selected command sequence.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 101 words
A method of accessing a specific function of a plurality of functions stored within a processor system having a key telephone station associated therewith, said method comprising the steps of depressing a key at said key telephone station associated with a specific function; transmitting a periodic interrogation command from said processor system to said key telephone station; transmitting an identification of said specific function associated with said depressed key from said key telephone station to said processor system in response to said periodic interrogation command; and accessing said specific function stored within said processor system in response to said transmitted identification.
Claim 9
Independent Claim 101 words
A method of accessing a specific function of a plurality of functions stored within a processor system having a key telephone station associated therewith, said method comprising the steps of depressing a key at said key telephone station associated with a specific function; transmitting a periodic interrogation command from said processor system to said key telephone station; transmitting an identification of said specific function associated with said depressed key from said key telephone station to said processor system in response to said periodic interrogation command; and accessing said specific function stored within said processor system in response to said transmitted identification.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method of accessing a specific function of a plurality of functions stored within a processor system having a key telephone station associated therewith according to Claim 7 further including the step of: processing said specific function after accessing thereof.
