Abstract
Abstract A system for increasing the frequency of a laser beam utilizes focused Cherenkov radiation. The system utilizes reflective/refractive properties of continuous optices (8, 5) to achieve increased frequency, which provides a means to form a focussed beam increased density in such application as optical disk technology.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
57 words
A harmonic optical generating system comprising an optical waveguide (3) having a non-linear characteristics, means (2) for directing coherent light into the waveguide (3), means for intercepting harmonic light (4) resultant from the exposure of the waveguide (3) to the coherent light, and collimator means (5) for forming the intercepted harmonic light into a generally parallel beam.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
73 words
The harmonic system of claim 1, wherein the wave guide (3) is generally cylindrical and adapted to guide light therethrough generally along a longitudinal axis thereof, the coherent light is received by the wave guide (3) generally along said axis, and the collimator means (5) is conical such that light from the waveguide (3) is directed generally to the base of the cone with a direction of propagation generally along the cone axis.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
37 words
The system of claim 2, wherein the collimator means (5) is contiguous with the waveguide (3) to form a non-linear waveguide having a generally cylindrical portion and a generally conical portion longitudinally disposed along a common axis.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
33 words
The system of any one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising lens means (6) disposed in the parallel beam of harmonic light to converge the harmonic light at a focal spot (7).
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
The system of claim 1, wherein the collimator means (10) comprises a generally concave reflective surface which at least partly surrounds said waveguide (9).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
37 words
The system of claim 5, wherein the collimator means (10) comprises a substance generally transparent to the coherent light and having a surface oriented at such a crtical angle that the coherent light undergoes total internal reflection.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
21 words
The system of claim 6, wherein the collimator means (10) is contiguously formed as an exterior portion of the waveguide (9).
Claim 9
Independent Claim
32 words
The system of any one of claims 1 to 7, including phase corrector means (16, 17, 18) disposed so that the coherent light passes therethrough prior to entry into the waveguide (15).
