Abstract

The present invention describes a DNA probe which is capable of hybridizing with part of the genome of pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes but which does not hybridize with parts of the genomes of other Listeria species and other bacteria humilytic. This probe is useful for identifying food sources infected with Listeria monocytogenes and for distinguishing these foods from food infected only with non-pathogenic Listeria species. Methods for detecting the presence of pathogenic Listeria in samples using such probes are also described.
