Abstract

Abstract Improved printers are disclosed which are characterised by means for inputting data which is arranged to function without the use of an alpha-numeric keyboard. The data inputting means may be a cursor moving device operating in conjunction with a graphics display system; a graphics display system having a touch-sensitive screen; a speech recognition unit; a memory or "smart card"; or an integral bar code reader. The cursor moving devices may be, for example, a tracker ball or a mouse.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 22
Claim 1
Independent Claim 62 words
A printer which comprises a housing; a printing unit; means for supplying to said printing unit a substrate onto which indicia are to be printed; and means for inputing data to control the nature of the indicia printed at said printing unit, characterised in that said means for inputting data is arranged to function without the use of a pre-configured alpha-numeric keyboard.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 62 words
A printer which comprises a housing; a printing unit; means for supplying to said printing unit a substrate onto which indicia are to be printed; and means for inputing data to control the nature of the indicia printed at said printing unit, characterised in that said means for inputting data is arranged to function without the use of a pre-configured alpha-numeric keyboard.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that said printing unit is a disposable printhead module.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterised in that said printing unit is an electrically operated printing unit.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterised in that said printing unit is a mechanical print system.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that said means for inputting data comprises a cursor moving device and a graphics display system.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
A printer as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that said cursor moving device is a tracker ball.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 17 words
A printer as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that said cursor moving device is a mouse.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 17 words
A printer as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that said cursor moving device is a joystick.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
A printer as claimed in claim 5, characterised in that said cursor moving device is a rotatable knob mounted on an axially displaceable shaft.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 29 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that said means for inputting data comprises a graphics display system having a touch sensitive screen.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that said means for inputting data comprises a speech recognition unit.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 32 words
A priinter as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that said means for inputting data comprises a memory card or a "smart card" which is pre-programmed with data.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 26 words
A printing system which comprises a printer as claimed in claim 12 together with a data entry terminal for programming said memory card or "smart card".
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 25 words
A printer as claimed in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, characterised in that said means for inputting data comprises an integral bar code reader.
Claim 16
