Abstract
Abstract The method comprises periodical checking of the level of clogging of the particulate filter, and if a decrease in clogging level is found which has not resulted from intentional regeneration the threshold at which intentional regeneration is initiated is lowered until, if necessary, the intentional regeneration is initiated.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim
98 words
A method for controlling the regeneration of at least one particulate filter installed in a diesel engine, characterised by comprising the following operations in sequence: - defining an upper clogging limit for said filter, on reaching which the regeneration is initiated; - periodically monitoring the level of clogging of said filter caused by the progressive accumulation of particulate in the filter; - comparing the last calculated clogging level with the previous level; - if the clogging level has undergone a reduction not resulting from intentional regeneration, defining a new clogging limit lower than the previously defined clogging limit.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
98 words
A method for controlling the regeneration of at least one particulate filter installed in a diesel engine, characterised by comprising the following operations in sequence: - defining an upper clogging limit for said filter, on reaching which the regeneration is initiated; - periodically monitoring the level of clogging of said filter caused by the progressive accumulation of particulate in the filter; - comparing the last calculated clogging level with the previous level; - if the clogging level has undergone a reduction not resulting from intentional regeneration, defining a new clogging limit lower than the previously defined clogging limit.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, characterised in that if a predetermined number of consecutive reductions in clogging level which have not resulted from intentional regeneration are noted, the regeneration of said filter is initiated.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
51 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, characterised by comprising a further operation consisting of checking if the time period which has passed since the last regeneration lies between a minimum threshold value and a maximum threshold value and providing a fault indication if it does not lie therebetween.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
180 words
An apparatus for controlling the regeneration of at least one particulate filter installed in a diesel engine, characterised by comprising: - regeneration means (21, 22) for said filter (1); - means (31, 32, 33, 6) for measuring quantities related to the clogging of said filter (1) by said particulate; - means (50) for processing said measured quantities in order to periodically calculate successive clogging levels of said filter consequent on progressive accumulation of said particulate; - means (50) for memorizing an upper clogging threshold for said filter (1), and arranged to activate said regeneration means (21, 22) each time the calculated clogging level exceeds said threshold; - means (50) for comparing the last clogging level calculated by said processing means with the previously calculated clogging level; - control means (50) which, if said comparison means (50) note a reduction in the clogging level which has not resulted from intentional regeneration, update the value of said threshold contained in said memory means (50) by providing a new clogging limit, the value of which is less than the previously memorized clogging limit.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
98 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 4, wherein said measurement means (31, 32, 33, 6) comprise a first pressure difference sensor (31) connected in parallel with said filter (1), a venturi device (6) connected downstream of said filter (1), and a second pressure difference sensor (32) connected between the outlet of said filter (1) and said venturi device (6), characterised by comprising a third pressure difference sensor (33) connected between the inlet of said filter (1) and said venturi device (6), ie substantially in parallel with the series- connected said first and second pressure difference sensors (31, 32).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
64 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 5, characterised by comprising container means (35) internally housing said first, second and third pressure difference sensors (31, 32, 33) and a temperature sensor; said temperature sensor (43) being connected to said processing means (50) to provide these latter with a signal for enabling the reading of the data provided by said pressure difference sensors (31, 32, 33).
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
69 words
An apparatus as claimed in claim 5 or 6, in which the number of said filters exceeds one and these are substantially disposed in parallel, characterised by comprising a single venturi device (6) connected downstream of said filters (1, 2) and a plurality of shutoff means (13, 14) each of which is installed upstream of a respective said filter (1, 2) and is controlled by said control means (50).
