Abstract

Abstract A method for the production of a cavity in a piston (23) is described. The method comprises the steps of forming a porous body around an element which has the shape of the desired cavity (17), heating to a temperature such that the element melts and infiltrates the porous body at least in the immediate vicinity of the resulting cavity. The article may then, for example, be incorporated into a piston for an internal combustion engine so as to form a cavity in the crown region (19) thereof.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 95 words
A method of forming a cavity (17) in an article (23), the method being characterised by including the steps of incorporating an element (12) within a porous body (15) , heating the porous body at a temperature greater than the melting temperature of at least a part of the contained element such that at least the porous body in the immediate vicinity (18) of the element becomes infiltrated with the material of the element to leave a residual cavity (17) in the body and then incorporating the cavity containing body (16) into an article (23).
Claim 2
Independent Claim 95 words
A method of forming a cavity (17) in an article (23), the method being characterised by including the steps of incorporating an element (12) within a porous body (15) , heating the porous body at a temperature greater than the melting temperature of at least a part of the contained element such that at least the porous body in the immediate vicinity (18) of the element becomes infiltrated with the material of the element to leave a residual cavity (17) in the body and then incorporating the cavity containing body (16) into an article (23).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method according to Claim 1 characterised in that the residual cavity possesses substantially the complete shape of the element.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method according to Claim 1 characterised in that the residual cavity possesses only a part of the shape of the element.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 19 words
A method according to any one preceding claim characterised in that the porous body is formed from a powder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to Claim 4 characterised in that the powder is ferrous based.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 17 words
A method according to any one preceding claim characterised in that the element is formed from powder.
