Abstract

Abstract An electric motor comprises a laminated stator core (13) supporting windings (16) to define similar adjacent poles. A rotor (12) is mounted to rotate within the stator. The similar poles in a group define flux paths with adjacent pole groups. Thus the flux paths (20) required are restricted to those between adjacent dissimilar pole groups. In this way the material of the core between the flux paths can be reduced as it is not required to carry flux itself. This redundant portion of the core can be shaped to accommodate neighbouring components or to reduce the material of the core laminations.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 115 words
An electric reluctance machine comprising a primary (10), having a primary core (13) defining primary poles (14); a secondary (12) having secondary poles (18); and a coil (16)or set of coils, the or each coil being connected and/or being located with respect to the primary poles so that the relative magnetic orientation of those poles in a group of adjacent primary poles with respect to the coil or coils is the same and the said orientation of the groups of primary poles is different in adjacent groups, characterised in that a portion of the primary core between adjacent primary poles in a group is relatively radially thinner than that between adjacent groups of primary poles.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 115 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 22 words
A machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the said groups of adjacent primary poles is embraced by a coil.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 16 words
A machine as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the primary core is angularly continuous.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
A machine as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the thinner portion of the primary core at least partially defines a substantially flat outer face of the core.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
A machine as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the primary is a stator (10) and the secondary is a rotor (12).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A machine as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the core is made up of a plurality of laterally extending laminations.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
A machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the coils are switched.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
A machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the poles in a group are salient.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 15 words
A machine as claimed in any of the preceding claims when connected as a motor.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 16 words
A machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8, when connected as a generator.
