Abstract
Abstract A disposable syringe comprises a tubular housing (1) having an entrance for a plunger (2) at one end and an outlet for fluid at the other end, the plunger (2) being disposed in the housing (1). Releasable connection by a spring washed (6) is provided between piston (4) and piston rod (3) for preventing the plunger (2) from drawing liquid into the syringe once it has been pushed in a forward direction.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim
60 words
A disposable syringe comprising a tubular housing (1) having an entrance for plunger (2) at one end and an outlet for fluid at the other end, the plunger (2) being disposed in the housing (1), characterized in that means are provided for preventing the plunger from drawing liquid into the syringe once it has been pushed in a forward direction.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
82 words
A syringe according to claim 1, characterized in that the plunger (2) comprises a piston (4) and piston rod (3) releasably coupled to one another and means for releasably holding the piston (4) and piston rod (3) in an engaged position when initially drawing fluid into the syringe and for disengaging the piston from the piston rod once the plunger is pushed forward to eject fluid, so that the plunger cannot pull the piston back to draw more fluid into the syringe.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
55 words
A syringe according to claim 2, characterized in that the piston (4) is releasbly coupled to the piston rod (3) by means of a spring washer (6) circumferentially disposed about the piston (4), the washer head (6) engaging the piston rod (3) when under compression and releasing the piston rod (3) when compression is released.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
86 words
A syringe according to any of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that the means for releasably holding the piston (4) and piston rod (3) in an engaged position comprises a spring washer (6) circumferentially engaging the piston on the piston rod when the washer (6) is compressed by the diameter of the tubular housing (1) and disengaging the piston from the piston rod by decompressing the spring washer (6) by moving it to a section of the housing (1) having a larger effective inner diameter.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
78 words
A syringe according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the inner diameter of the housing (1) comprises a narrower rear section (11) and a wider forward section (10), so that a spring washer (6) engaging a piston (4) and piston rod (3) when compressed in the narrower rear section (11) is decompressed and will permanently disengage the piston (4) from the piston rod (3) when pushed forward into the wider diameter housing section (10).
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
108 words
A syringe according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that means for compressing and decompressing the spring washer (6) comprises a plurality of teeth (13) depending from the inner surface of the syringe body and a cylindrical sleeve (16) disposed about the piston (4) and defining a plurality of complementary teeth (17) protruding from the outer surface of the sleeve (16) into engagement with the depending teeth (13) of the syringe body (1), the teeth being arranged to permit movement of the sleeve in one direction within the syringe body and to prevent movement of the sleeve in the other direction within the syringe body.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
27 words
A syringe according to claim 6, characterized in that the depending teeth (13) are disposed within a channel (14) defined in the wall of the syringe body.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
22 words
A disposable syringe, characterized in that it comprises a retractable hypodermic needle (2) arranged for retraction within the syringe (1) after use.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
22 words
A disposable syringe, characterized in that it comprises a retractable hypodermic needle (2) arranged for retraction within the syringe (1) after use.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
84 words
A disposable syringe according to claim 8, characterized in that it comprises a syringe body (1) having a needle retaining portion (31), a plunger (3 b ) slidably disposed within the syringe body, a hypodermic needle (2 a ) defining engagement means for engagement by the plunger after injection, the needle (2 a ) frictionally disposed within the needle retaining portion, the needle being retractable from the retaining portion (31) by retracting the plunger (3 b) when engaged with the needle (2 a ).
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
40 words
A syringe according to claim 9, characterized in that the engagement means comprises a hook member (35) and the plunger (3 b ) defines a hook receiving recess including an engagement shoulder (29) for non-releasably engaging the hook member (35).
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
53 words
A syringe according to any of claims 8 to 10, characterized in that a pair of plastic retaining rings (32, 33) are disposed in the needle retaining portion (31) and a rubber plug (34) disposed between the retaining rings (32, 33), the needle (2 a ) passing through the rings and the plug.
