Process for preparing glass-forming condensation products
Abstract
A process for the production of condensates which can be processed into glass is described, in which at least one silicon compound hydrolyzable to SiO₂, at least one compound hydrolyzable to Al₂O₃, B₂O₃ or TiO₂ and at least one hydrolyzable alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound are brought into contact with at least the stoichiometrically required amount of water . According to the invention, the hydrolysis takes place in the presence of a complexing agent which is selected from β-carbonylcarboxylic esters and C₂-C₅-carboxylic acids or their carboxylate ions, thereby preventing precipitates from hydrolysis products of the very reactive aluminum and boron compounds from forming while the less reactive silicon compounds are still unchanged or only partially hydrolyzed. The condensation products thus produced can be sintered into glass after drying with thermal compaction, without the glass transition temperature of the glass in question having to be substantially exceeded.
